    What Are the 12 Laws of the Universe?

    It’s likely that at some point in your life, you’ve heard of the Law of Attraction. This universal law is the foundation for the hit book The Secret and is often discussed in podcasts, self-development books, spirituality blogs, and on social media. The belief that like attracts like has inspired many to take control of their lives through sending forth more positivity, gratitude, and sincere kindness into the world, knowing that the positive energy they emit will always come back to them, often in miraculous and mysterious ways.

    And while the Law of Attraction is immensely powerful on its own, it is actually just one of 12 spiritual laws that are all inextricably linked. When you live in alignment with all 12 of these laws, you feel a greater sense of purpose and are able to see how all experiences serve your highest good. These laws also guide you in creating your truest, most authentic, most abundant life.

    When you discover the 12 Laws of the Universe, you begin to see how the Law of Attraction is only one piece of the pie. For instance, in order to manifest your desires through the Law of Attraction, you must also follow the Law of Inspired Action, which directs you to follow your inner knowing when the universe is nudging you in a certain direction.

    Just as I discussed in my post on the 12 Laws of Karma, these laws are not mean to scare you into submission like the rules you were told to follow in primary school. The beauty of these laws is they do the very opposite of confining you; they set you free. When you live in alignment with the 12 universal laws, you feel a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others. You understand your own power in creating the beautiful life you desire, and you’re able to feel deeper gratitude and appreciation for all that you have. You align with your purpose and are able to navigate the balance between work and rest. These 12 universal laws help you to create more joy, love, peace, and prosperity in your daily life.

    Below, I go in-depth on each of the 12 Laws of the Universe and how they can serve you in your daily life. As you read through these laws, I encourage you to approach them with an open heart and open mind. You might even choose to journal on each of these laws and how they connect to your own life. Know that these laws are meant to support your mind, body, and spirit and serve your total well-being.

    The 12 Laws of the Universe

    Law of Divine Oneness

    The Law of Divine Oneness states that everything and everyone is intrinsically connected to one another as we all come from the same source. You have a substantial impact on the world with every word you say, thought you think, belief you hold, and action you take. Sometimes, you’ll gain an understanding of how your words and actions affect others, and other times, you may never fully become aware of how something you said or did had a ripple effect in the universe.

    This is the foundational law of the universe, and it is rooted in empathy and compassion. As you gain awareness of how you are intrinsically connected to all beings, you cultivate more empathy for others. You’re able to release anger and negative feelings toward another because you inherently understand that they are no different from you. We are all one. If this concept seems kind of scary or uncertain at first, I encourage you to journal or meditate on this idea. And know this: knowing that we are all one and feeling connected to all is not a weakness. In fact, it’s an invaluable power, worth more than any possession you could ever hold.

    Law of Vibration

    The Law of Vibration states that everything and every being is in a constant state of vibration, always emitting frequencies and energies that often aren’t seen on the surface. Everything is always in constant in motion. Take a look around you: every object you can see is emitting a certain frequency. Some are higher frequencies and some are lower. Next time you walk outside to your car, look up at the sky. The sun carries its own energy. So does your car. And the trees in your front yard. And even the car keys in your hand.

    Now look within. You, too, are emitting a vibrational frequency. This frequency can and often does change. And once you understand that you possess your own vibrational frequency, you realize you have the power to tune your frequency to a higher vibration. The vibrational frequency you emit has a profound effect on your daily experience. When you operate at a higher frequency, you invite a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment into your world.

    Law of Correspondence

    Have you ever heard of the phrase, “The universe continues to deliver to you the same lesson until you learn it”? The Law of Correspondence states that patterns continue to repeat in the universe on both grand and small scales. Look at recurring patterns in your own life. Do you feel like you continually have bad luck with dating? Have you tried and tried and tried to be successful in a specific endeavor to no avail? Do you ever feel like the universe is out to get you?

    The patterns we experience are directly correlated to our inner worlds. That means that what you’re experiencing in your outer world is a mirror of your own inner world. You have the power to change your lived experiences in your outer world by changing your inner world. If your life has felt particularly chaotic recently, consider the ways in which you may be experiencing chaos within. To release the external chaos and invite more peace into your life, seek to cultivate peace within.

    Law of Attraction

    Chances are, you may already know a bit about the Law of Attraction as this is undoubtedly the most well-known of the universal laws. The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like; the vibrations, beliefs, and emotions we put out into the world are what we receive in our lived experiences. If you approach your daily life emitting feelings of joy, love, and positivity, you receive experiences in your life that mirror these emotions. But if you maintain a negative attitude in which you always consider yourself the victim and claim that nothing ever works out for you, you’ll continue to receive experiences that reflect this belief.

    I do always think it’s important to note that the Law of Attraction is not an invitation to engage in toxic positivity. You do not have to force yourself to suppress negative emotions and pretend you’re happy when you truly not. You can feel sad sometimes but still believe in your heart that everything is working out for your highest good. You can have a bad day while also knowing that it will pass. When you experience these emotions, explore them with gentleness and compassion, and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this experience? In what ways is this experience serving my highest good?”

    Law of Inspired Action

    The Law of Inspired Action is inextricably connected to the Law of Attraction and is often the overlooked step that may cause some to claim that the Law of Attraction “doesn’t work.” The Law of Inspired Action states that you must take real, actionable, inspired steps in order to achieve your goals and invite your manifestations into your life. But what exactly is an inspired step? An inspired step is action derived from your inner knowing. It’s when something deep within calls you to take action, even when it doesn’t make sense. Inspired action is based on surrendering to the guidance of the universe and listening to the call of your inner knowing.

    Let’s use dating as an example. You want to attract love into your life, so you work to vibrate at the frequency of joy, love, and all the positive feelings you associate with finding the love of your life. You go out every weekend, believing this is the best way to meet someone. However, deep down, your inner knowing is telling you to sign up for an online dating website. You resist the idea because you really wanted to meet someone “the old fashioned way.” Going out every weekend is an action, but signing up for that online dating profile would be inspired action because it stems from a deep inner knowing within.

    Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy

    This one has arguably the most confusing title, so let’s break it down:

    • Perpetual: constant, everlasting, without end
    • Transmutation: the act of changing/being changed from one form into another

    The Law of Perpetual Transmutation states that energetically, everything in the universe is constantly fluctuating and changing from one form to another. Most of the time, you don’t see these changes because they’re happening at a cellular level. Here’s what you need to know about this law: your vibrational frequency has the power to affect another’s, and another’s vibrational frequency can affect yours. If a coworker comes to your cubicle and starts complaining, their negativity can affect your own energy. You don’t see your energy changing, but you can feel it; one moment, you were having a great day, and the next, you feel frustrated and dejected. On the other hand, your positive energy can lift up your coworker’s and help their day become a little brighter.

    The key here is understanding how another’s energy can affect your own and vice versa; once you understand this power, you can use it to protect yourself from negative energy and uplift those around you.

    Law of Cause and Effect

    This law is exactly as it sounds, and if you’re familiar with Newton’s Third Law of Motion, you’re likely already putting the pieces together. The Law of Cause and Effect states that all actions have corresponding reactions, or consequences. (The word “consequences” tends to have a negative connotation, but consequences can be positive, too). When you give money to a homeless person out of a place of sincerity and goodwill, this kindness will come back to you, even though you may not always see it right away. Similarly, if you lie, cheat, or steal, you will eventually feel these effects, even if not immediately.

    This law is directly tied to the Great Law, the first of the 12 Laws of Karma. To read more about this, I encourage you to check out my post on the 12 Laws of Karma here.

    Law of Compensation

    The Law of Compensation is often tied to the phrase, “You reap what you sow.” This can have both a positive and negative connotation, and the idea is pretty closely tied to the concepts in the Law of Attraction and the Law of Cause and Effect. (What you put out is what you receive.)

    So how does this law differ from the other laws it’s connected to?

    I like to think of it as this: compensation can come in many forms, both good and bad. And often, what may appear good on the surface can really be a negative thing, and what can appear negative on the surface can be a positive thing.

    For instance, say you’ve been trying to manifest a specific job. If you don’t get the job, you may feel like your manifestation has failed, but what if this job wasn’t as good as it seemed? The universe may be saving you from negative experiences and toxic energy tied to this job. Or maybe you do get the job, but you lied and deceived in order to get it. Soon, you realize that the job that you believed would change your life is changing it, but for the worse rather than for the better.

    Again, this comes back to the idea that you reap what you sow. Did you lie and deceive to get that job? You may still get it, but it won’t be the glamorous and awesome position you believed it to be.

    Law of Relativity

    The Law of Relativity states that everything is neutral. When we label something as good or bad, rich or poor, or enough or not enough, it’s only because our perspective is influenced by our personal experiences and relationships.

    For instance, one person may think making $20 an hour is a huge amount because they have only made lesser amounts in the past, and they’ve adapted their lifestyle to fit their average paychecks. However, for another, $20 an hour could be a huge pay decrease because they’ve always made significantly more, and they’ve adapted their lifestyle to higher paychecks.

    For one person, an 1,800 square-foot house could be considered huge because they grew up in smaller houses, but for another, 1,800 square feet might be deemed small because they’ve always had twice the space.

    So is $20 an hour a lot or a little? Is 1,800 square feet big or small? Neither; they’re both neutral. The labels we put on these experiences are relative to our personal lived experiences. The important thing here is to remain mindful of your biases and the labels you put on different experiences. When you’re slipping into a state of feeling like you don’t have enough, you can shift your perspective and view your situation from someone who has less than you. This can help you see that you do, in fact, have plenty, allowing you to feel more gratitude and appreciation in your daily life.

    Law of Polarity

    The Law of Polarity states that everything has an opposite, and the existence of these opposites is vital in helping us to gain a deeper perspective of our own lives. This law is all about embracing contrast in your life; the bad times help you to appreciate the good. A bad relationship may help you to appreciate a good one (and to know what you’re looking for moving forward). Rainy days help you appreciate the sunny ones, and too much sun can help you appreciate the rain.

    I always think of the quote, “In order to love your life, you can’t hate the experiences that shaped you.” For instance, in my own personal life, I’ve had past failures and rejections as a writer that felt really difficult at the time. However, living through these experiences has made me appreciate my successes even more. And I don’t hate that I had these experiences, because I understand that they all served my highest good.

    Law of Rhythm

    The Law of Rhythm is all about cycles and perpetual movement. The Law of Rhythm states that everything comes in cycles, and nothing stays in one state forever. This can most easily be seen in the changing of seasons. Summer eventually gives way to fall, which turns into winter, which turns into spring, and eventually, it’s summer again.

    You can also think of a human’s life cycle, from infant to toddler to child to teenager to adult; the aging process is a cycle that never stops.

    This also manifests in ways that aren’t always as easy to see unless you step back to get a wider perspective. Are you experiencing hardships in your life? Those hardships won’t last forever. When you understand that this is just where you are in a cycle, and that this hardship isn’t a permanent state, you are able to cultivate more calmness and peace within.

    It’s also important to pay attention to your own inner rhythm, and to flow with this rhythm instead of against it. For instance, maybe you’re feeling tired and need a break from the stress of daily life. Instead of trying to ignore these feelings, you can choose to flow with your own inner rhythm, possibly by taking a social media break and spending a weekend out camping in nature.

    Law of Gender

    The Law of Gender is less about man and woman and more about energy. The Law of Gender states there are two types of energy: masculine and feminine. In order to live a fulfilling, joyful, purpose-driven life, we must achieve a balance between these two energies.

    Masculine energy is tied to hustling, achieving, and doing. Feminine energy is tied to surrendering, allowing, and just being. Neither energy is better or worse than the other. When you find a balance between the two, you’re able to live your truest, most authentic life. Here, it’s also important to listen to your inner rhythm. For instance, if you’ve been in hustle mode for too long, your inner being may tell you it’s time to step back for a while and allow yourself to just be.

    What is Karma?

    What do you think of when you heard the word karma?

    The saying “what goes around comes around” may come to mind. Often, this is said with a negative connotation. When you see or hear about somebody who lies, steals, or treats another with unkindness, you may say, “Karma will come back around and catch up with them.”

    While this is one aspect of karma, and the central idea in the First Law of Karma (The Great Law), there is more to the concept of karma than most believe.

    In Sanskrit, the word karma means “action.” When I have a good thought or do a good deed, this goodness has positive effects and ultimately comes back to me. When I have a bad thought or do something that I know is harmful, the negative effects will ultimately come back to me as well. Good actions beget more goodness; bad actions beget more badness.

    But it’s not just about good and bad. It’s about every action having meaning; everything we do and say contributes to the overall whole. Everything is connected. Every action matters.

    And often, it’s about not labeling actions and consequences as good or bad at all. When you believe something bad is happening to you, it may be time to take a step back and evaluate your life with gentle and non-judgmental awareness. What lessons might the universe be trying to teach you? Are you blaming others for what happens in your life, or are you able to take personal responsibility?

    Rather than saying, “This bad thing is always happening to me,” you have the opportunity to turn it around and ask, “What can I learn from this experience?”

    How to Use the 12 Laws of Karma

    You get to decide your personal relationship with these laws and how they may play a role in your life.

    But I do want to offer this advice:

    Don’t view these laws as rules that are meant to tie you down or fit you into a box. The word “law” may have a negative connotation for some, as you may view it as an unbending rule that prevents you from experiencing true freedom.

    But the opposite is true here.

    The 12 Laws of Karma are not meant to limit or constrict you; through their very nature, they’re meant to lead you to a life of joy, freedom, passion, purpose, and love. These laws are not the rules you were forced to memorize and obey in school, leaving you to free trapped or even chained to a set of laws you never even agreed to.

    These laws are designed to show you the road map to a beautiful and fulfilling life. They help you to live in the present moment and find joy in this moment right now, no matter what your external world may look like. And they show you the way to creating meaningful change and living the life you’ve always desired: the beautiful and abundant life of your dreams.

    So as you read through the 12 Laws of Karma, allow yourself to gently explore them with an open heart, receiving them as a loving gift from the universe. These laws are not meant to hinder you but rather to show you the path to true freedom and to a life filled with love, fulfillment, and abundance.

    The 12 Laws of Karma

    The Great Law

    The Great Law, also known as The Law of Cause and Effect, fits what most of us traditionally think of when we hear the word karma. Anyone familiar with manifestation and the Law of Attraction will also be familiar with the concepts presented in this law. The foundation of this law is the idea that whatever we put out into the world is what we get back. While you may think of this in terms of actions (i.e. if you see someone drop their wallet and pick it up to give back to them, this kindness will come back to you), it’s also important to view it in terms of energy.

    The energy you put out into the world is what comes back to you, whether you’re conscious of it or not.

    Say you wake up every morning feeling frustrated and annoyed that you have to go to work again today. The shower water is never hot enough, the other cars on your commute are always driving too slow, and everyone else seems to be getting raises and promotions but not you. You have a scarcity mindset; no matter how much you have, it’ll never be enough. Because of this, you emit negative energy into the universe. And even though you don’t want to receive more negativity, that’s what you keep getting: more scarcity, more lacking, more lukewarm showers and slow commutes.

    But what if you changed your perspective? What if you stepped into the shower feeling grateful for the running water that keeps you clean? What if you focus on the fact that you have reliable transportation to get you to work? What if every time one of your coworkers got a raise or promotion, you cheered them on? Things change once you start viewing your world from the perspective of gratitude and appreciation; you emit positivity into the world, and thus, you receive more positive energy in return.

    Do you want abundance in your life? Become the embodiment of abundance. Do you want love? Start with showing yourself unconditional love, then share that love with the world around you. If you want something, become the embodiment of that thing, then watch as more of it flows into your life in beautiful and miraculous ways.

    The Law of Creation

    The first law flows effortlessly into this second law, and it’s likely you’ll quickly see how all of these laws are intertwined. The Law of Creation states that you must take action to create the life you desire. You are a powerful creator, and you have the power to co-create your life along with the universe. But too often, we sit back, hoping things will work out but not actively doing anything about it. You must become an active participant in your story. This doesn’t mean trying to control outcomes, forcing things to happen, or stubbornly staying on a path that doesn’t truly feel right for you.

    Rather, it goes back to the idea of putting out the energy you want to receive. And it also means taking inspired action when your inner knowing leads you in a certain direction. If you want to create abundance, first become abundance. Then, when you feel that nudge to take action, do so in a state of effortless flow. This is what co-creating is: setting an intention, telling the universe what you want, become the embodiment of what you want, and trusting the universe to lead you where you’re meant to go.

    The Law of Humility

    Are you able to accept responsibility for your past and current reality? For instance, let’s go back to the “hate your job” scenario. Let’s say that you’re in a position you don’t enjoy, and you haven’t received the promotion or raise you think you deserve. You enter the office with a bad attitude and leave with an even worse one. Do you blame your boss or your coworkers for your unhappiness? Is there someone else a few cubicles away who seems to be getting all of the rewards you want, and you blame his or her success for your failure?

    The Law of Humility is all about accepting that you have created your current reality through actions, choices, and the energy you’ve emitted. It’s about not blaming others for everything that’s seemingly going wrong in your life but taking responsibility for your current place in life. In order to change something, you must first accept it. So in order to change the circumstances of the job you don’t like, you must accept the role you’ve played in creating your current experience; through acceptance, you remove your blinders, embrace the truth, and are able to see what must change in order to create a life that you love.

    The Law of Growth

    Do you consider yourself a fixer? Do you good-intentionally try to change the people in your life in order to help them? When things are going badly, do you first try to change your external world (places, people, things) before looking internally?

    The Law of Growth says that there is only one thing you truly have control over: yourself. If you want to make a positive mark on the world, don’t start with what you can do externally; start with what you can do internally. To change the world, start with changing yourself. Not “becoming a different person” type of change. Rather, seek the kind of change that comes from true growth.

    This also means that you may have to accept that you can’t change everything or everyone, even if you believe it would be in their highest good. Trust that if you focus on your own growth and your own path, you’ll illuminate the way for others. But it has to be their choice.

    The Law of Responsibility

    The Law of Responsibility links closely to the Law of Humility (and, in fact, all the laws I’ve discussed above).

    Can you take responsibility for your current life circumstances, good and bad?

    The Law of Responsibility states that rather than looking for external reasons and excuses for why something might be wrong in your life, you must look internally. Because it doesn’t start out there; it starts in here. In me. In you. In all of us.

    It’s important to truly evaluate your life from a place of non-judgmental, conscious awareness. What’s going right? What’s going wrong? Now, instead of looking outward for reasons why something might be going right or wrong, look inward. Know that this isn’t about judging or criticizing yourself. (In fact, I encourage you not to judge, berate, or criticize yourself.) It’s about taking responsibility for the choices you make, whether that be an action you’ve chosen to take or an energy you’ve chosen to emit.

    The Law of Connection

    The Law of Connection states that everything in the universe, and everything in your life, is connected; your past, present, and future are all connected. No action or decision is insignificant because every action effects who you become. Your actions yesterday affect the person you are today, and your actions today affect the person you are tomorrow.

    When I think of the Law of Connection, I like to think of the affirmation, “Every small step I take makes a big difference.”

    I can use this website itself as an example. There are a lot of daily actions I take to maintain this website. There are also certain things I had to do only once or twice, like installing a certain plugin or uploading a picture for my author bio. I write and edit multiple blog posts a week and create dozens of Pinterest pins for my blog posts. I’ve changed the overall layout of the site several times, which is a task that can take a lot of time depending on the extent of my changes.

    So is writing a blog post more important than installing a plugin? Is changing the layout more important than uploading an author bio picture?

    According to the Law of Connection, no. Each step leads to the next step, and no step is more important than the other because they’re all connected. This is true for everything in our lives.

    And this is true in terms of yourself, as well. You may think of some of your past days as being more important and consequential than others, but every single day you’ve experienced has created the person you are today. Everything is connected. Everything is important. Your past, present, and future are all intertwined and deeply connected to one another.

    The Law of Focus

    The Law of Focus states that you should focus on one thing at a time, and if your focus is on spiritual values, you will not have space in your life to focus on lesser feelings such as greed, jealousy, and anger.

    What are spiritual values? They’re feelings and beliefs stemmed in love, peace, compassion, trust, and kindness: positive thoughts and emotions that welcome more of these positive feelings into your world. Ultimately, you decide your highest spiritual values and what feels true and right for you.

    When you focus on feelings that allow you to be spiritually aligned, you have no room in your mind or heart for negative energy that doesn’t serve your mind, body, or spirit.

    The Law of Giving & Hospitality

    What do you believe in? What do you want most for the world? Do you have a vision of a world that is filled with peace and love? Do you believe in selfless kindness and generosity? Do you believe in connection over division and compassion over judgment?

    This law is essentially the practice what you preach law. The Law of Giving & Hospitality calls on you to demonstrate what you believe in and become the embodiment of your genuine desires for this world.

    If you envision a world filled with peace and love, give peace and love to yourself and others.

    If you believe in selfless kindness and generosity, be selflessly kind and generous to all.

    If you want to see a world connected in compassion and love, give this love and compassion and become connected to all.

    Let your actions reflect your deepest and truest beliefs. If you want to see change in the world, become the change by giving what you seek.

    The Law of Here and Now

    The only thing that truly exists is this moment right now. The past is gone, and the future is not here. True inner peace comes from embracing the present moment.

    The Law of Here and Now states that true peace of mind comes from living in the present moment, and you cannot embrace the present moment if you’re always looking back into the past or ahead into the future. Reliving the past prevents you from engaging with your life just as it is right now. And when you’re constantly focusing on the old, you’re unable to create the new.

    When you find yourself replaying events of the past or worrying about the future, gently bring yourself back to the present moment. Use all of your senses to discover the world that exists right now. You might have a grounding mantra that helps, such as “In this moment, I have everything I need.”

    The Law of Change

    Have you ever heard the phrase “history repeats itself”? That concept is at the core of the Law of Change, which states that history will continue to repeat itself until you’ve learned the lessons you’re meant to learn and have taken actionable steps to change the pattern.

    You might see this play out in all different parts of your life: relationships, career, and your own personal relationship with yourself. As an example, after I graduated college, I immediately took an office job at a local clinic because it felt like the responsible thing to do. It didn’t take long for me to realize I felt unhappy and unfulfilled in that position, so I took a new office job. Not long after, I experienced these same feelings, so I found a new office job. And for the next few years, I hopped from one office job to the next, always believing that maybe the next one would be the right fit. I kept repeating the pattern until I finally accepted that I wasn’t following my true calling. The next step was hard, because it required me to take a leap of faith with no assurances that anything would work out.

    But you know what happened?

    I found true joy, purpose, and fulfillment when I finally followed my purpose and passion. I grew, and I’m still growing every single day.

    Change can be scary sometimes, but when you embrace change and start on a new path, you open yourself to experiencing genuine joy, fulfillment, and growth.

    The Law of Patience and Reward

    The Law of Patience and Reward is rooted in the belief that consistency, patience, and continuing to show up day after day, even when you don’t see the rewards today, will bring true joy, peace, and fulfillment.

    I think of this as the law of no overnight successes.

    To help myself in moments when I begin to feel impatient, I think back to my marathon training program. When I signed up for my first marathon, I knew I wouldn’t be able to suddenly run 26.2 miles overnight. So I created a training program in which I ran 4 days a week with 3 rest days. Each week, over the course of 14 weeks, I slightly increased my long runs and overall mileage by a mile or two. On the day of the marathon, I trusted that my consistency, effort, and patience in the process would pay off. And you know what? It did. Four hours and thirty-two minutes later, I crossed the finish line, my first full marathon complete.

    Now, this can be a little different from other scenarios that require consistency and patience. While I had an exact date to work toward for my marathon, you might be working on a goal in which you have no idea when you’ll see the rewards of your effort. And that’s okay. Just know that showing up for yourself day after day and being consistent in your efforts is always worth it.

    Meanwhile, don’t wait for all of your dreams to manifest in your reality before you allow yourself to experience true joy. Feel joyful now knowing that you are on the path, aligned with your purpose and passion, and exactly where you’re meant to be in this moment.

    You matter. Your voice matters. Your presence matters. You were born with specific goals and talents that only you possess. Only you have lived your unique experiences. And that dream that’s in your heart? It’s there for a reason.

    These days, it’s hard to avoid using Amazon in some capacity for online shopping. It’s efficient, convenient, and is a name that’s trusted when it comes to deliveries, returns, and finding a product at a reasonable price.

    Crystals and Gemstones

    If you’re anything like me when I was first learning about crystals, you may feel a natural pull towards crystals and gemstones, but you’re not entirely sure what exactly to do with them.

    I approached my journey with crystals assuming they were probably really complicated to use and that I had to have some kind of special power to make them work for me. However, all it took was a few Google searches and a trip to the local bookstore to realize that I’d been way off in this assumption.

    I didn’t have to possess any superpowers to work with crystals.

    I just needed to have an open mind, an open heart, and the willingness to trust and believe.

    If you’re looking to incorporate crystals in your daily life, I’ve included everything you need to get started below: how to cleanse, program, and use your crystals, plus how to use crystal grids and pendulums. I’ve also included a section on using crystals for manifestation as well as the best crystals for beginners. Finally, throughout this post, you’ll find links to crystals and accessories you can purchase today.

    It may seem like an overwhelming amount of information at first, but I’ve simplified it into the most basic steps. And I promise, once you get started, you’ll find that using crystals and gemstones in your daily life is very easy. In fact, once you begin experiencing their profound transformational power, you’ll wonder why you ever waited so long to start.

    How to Cleanse Crystals

    When you first purchase or receive a crystal, it’s likely touched many hands before you. It may have had a previous owner, or it has traveled long distances in a shipping container. However your crystal comes to you, it’s very likely that it still holds the energy of the people and places it has seen. That’s why cleansing your crystals after you receive them is so important. By cleansing your crystal, you’re starting with a blank energy slate, and you can then intentionally program it with your own positive energy.

    Additionally, you should also cleanse your crystal regularly, especially if it’s in a piece of jewelry you wear often or if it’s one that you carry with you throughout the day. Your crystals continue to hold and store energy, and if they’re holding onto too much energy, they start to lose their effectiveness. Cleansing your crystals releases this energy and allows them to be fully effective for you.

    Luckily, cleansing crystals is easy. Use any of the methods below for cleansing your crystals and releasing trapped and stored energy within.

    Sage: Using a firesafe bowl or abalone shell to catch any burning embers and/or ash, light your sage and immerse the crystal in the smoke for thirty to sixty seconds. While you can do this anywhere, I prefer to do this either outside or near an open window. On top of safety reasons, it allows any negative energy to rise and disappear into the air, ensuring it doesn’t remain in your sacred space. (You can also use Palo Santo in place of Sage if you prefer.)

    Water: For this method, I like to use clean, natural water like a creek, river, or stream, but it’s totally okay (and often easier) to use a faucet as well. Hold your stone beneath the surface or underneath the running water to cleanse. Just make sure to first do a quick Google search or consult a book on crystals to make sure water is safe for your stone. You don’t want to use this method for soft stones like Selenite.

    Use Selenite or Clear Quartz: Selenite and Clear Quartz are unique in that they’re able to cleanse and purify other crystals. Lay your crystal on a piece of Selenite or Clear Quartz for at least twenty-four hours. If you can’t place your crystal on top, you can also place them side-by-side with their edges touching.

    Nature: Nature is a powerful healer, not just for humans but for crystals as well. Lay your crystals out in nature and let them experience the healing presence of the earth for a day. You can place crystals on the soil, on a tree branch, on a potted plant, among the blades of grass, in your garden, or anywhere else outside where you feel a sense of peace and harmony.

    Sun: Many crystals love the bright energy and light of the sun. Just make sure first that this is safe for your stone. Some stones, like Amethyst, shouldn’t be placed directly in the sun for too long.

    Moon: You can place your crystals outside overnight anytime, but this is especially powerful during the Full Moon when the moonlight is brightest.

    How to Program Crystals

    Programming crystals is all about setting intentions. This allows you to truly align with why you chose this crystal and what guidance, answers, or healing you hope it can provide for you.

    It helps to come up with a sentence or two that aligns with the intention you want to set. For instance, if you want to embrace more creativity in your life, your intention might be, “I am filled with inspired ideas and unlimited creativity. Limitless creativity is always at my fingertips.” For protection from external negative energy, your intention may be, “I am protected from negative energy. All of the energy that flows within and around me supports my highest good and total wellbeing.

    To begin programming your crystal, find a quiet spot where you’ll be free from outside noise and external distractions. You may want to light candles or cleanse your space with sage before you begin. Do what feels most comfortable for you.

    Hold your crystal within your palm and close your eyes. Visualize your intentions coming to life. For instance, to manifest more creativity, visualize yourself living your most creative life. Feel the positive feelings associated with embracing your inner creativity. Continue your visualization until you feel that the crystal has been programmed with your intention. (This will simply be an inner knowing.)

    Some people like to begin by raising their crystal to their lips and gently blowing on the crystal. As you breathe, internally state your intention, repeating this for several minutes. If this practice feels comfortable for you, you can add it to your programming ritual.

    How to Use Crystals

    There are several ways you can use crystals, some of which are more passive and others that require more active involvement. Even during the more passive practices, though, it’s still important to keep your intention in mind. Return to this intention throughout the day, and acknowledge the work your crystal is doing for you.

    Wear Crystals as Jewelry: Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings aren’t only beautiful, but they offer an easy way to keep your crystals nearby throughout the day. By wearing your gemstones as jewelry, your chosen stones can protect your energy, calm your mind, and soothe your spirit.

    Meditate with Crystals: If you already have a meditation practice, or are looking to start one, crystals can be a profound addition to your practice. As you meditate, you can hold your crystal(s) in your palms or near your heart center. You can also place the stones over their corresponding energy center (chakra) while laying down.     Keep in Your Office/Workspace: Keep your gemstones visible in your office or workspace, or if you have a job that requires you to walk around, see if you can keep it in your pocket or somewhere accessible to you. Blue Lace Agate is the perfect crystal to keep with you while you work as it calms your mind, soothes your spirit, and helps you to maintain tranquility. Black Tourmaline is another one of my favorites because it protects you from external negative energy.

    Create a Sacred Space: Crystals, candles, essential oils, pillows, books, plants . . . any and all of these components can be used to create a sacred space for yourself. Whatever you want to include, make your sacred space your own. Allow it to be a safe place filled with positive, healing energy. You can fill your sacred space with as many crystals as you want. Allow this to be a place where you can meditate, journal, or simply sit and hold your crystals, restoring harmony and peace within.     How to Use Crystal Grids

    A crystal grid is a special geometric layout of stones formed with a specific intention in mind, such as to heal one or more of your chakras. The central stone in the grid corresponds with your intention, and the surrounding stones amplify your intentions and support the flow of positive energy.

    To begin creating your grid, you first want to set your intention. Why are you creating this grid today? Know that there are no wrong answers. Maybe you want to manifest abundance. Maybe you want to align with your highest self. Or maybe you want to cultivate the courage and strength to make a big step in your personal life. Whatever your intention is, take a moment to align with it and allow it to guide you as you create your grid.

    After you’ve set your intention, you can begin creating your grid. To do this, you’ll want to pick your grid shape (triangle, circle, square) and which crystals and gemstones you want to incorporate into your crystal grid. Choose crystals that coincide with your intention. For instance, if your intention is to open your heart and cultivate more self-love, you might incorporate crystals such as Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, Pink Opal, and Clear Quartz. Place the stone that most powerfully resonates with your intention in the center; this is called the Anchor Stone. Place the other stones around the Anchor Stone in the specific layout you’ve chosen. If this is your first time creating a crystal grid, it may help to use a grid template. You can find some on Amazon (I’ve linked to a few below) or online. I really like this article from Love & Light School of Crystal Therapy on how to create a crystal grid, and it also includes links to a free template pack.

    You don’t have to only include crystals in your grid, though. Do you have a locket from your grandmother that represents unconditional love to you? Use this powerful loving energy in your grid!

    Finally, you can activate the grid by stating your intention aloud. You can also use a clear quartz point to activate your crystal grid. The article I linked to above gives a detailed explanation on how to use a clear quartz point to activate your grid.

    Now that your crystal grid’s ready, you’ll want to make a point of sitting with your grid daily to connect with its energy. I like to do this through meditation, but if you don’t meditate, you can simply sit in front of it. Think back to your intention. If your intention is to cultivate more self-love and self-compassion, feel the energy of unconditional love flowing to and through you.

    How to Use Crystal Pendulums

    A pendulum is a string, cord, or chain with a small object at the end. This object is usually a triangular shaped crystal, but some pendulums will have objects made of wood, stone, metal, or glass on the end. Pendulums are most often used to gain clarity and insight into a question or issue you may be having. The practice of crystal dowsing or pendulum dowsing means to use your pendulum to receive guidance on a situation that has arisen for you.

    There’s no rules about what kind of situation this might be, or whether it’s objectively big or small. You might turn to your pendulum for help on finding your lost car keys or for guidance on what to eat for dinner tonight. You can also turn to it for guidance on whether you should leave your job or move across the country or fully commit to that new person you’ve started seeing.

    There’s a lot more to be said about the power of the pendulum, and if you’re curious to learn more, I encourage you to read my blog post on all things pendulum-related here.

    For this post, we’re going to skip right to the how-to’s: how to use a crystal pendulum to receive guidance on any situation you may be encountering in your current experience.

    Before you use your pendulum, you’ll want to cleanse and charge it as outlined in the steps for cleansing and programming crystals above. Consider the time you spend working with your pendulum to be sacred, removing distractions so that you can focus solely on the connection between you and the pendulum.

    Here are the essential steps for using a pendulum. Again, I go into a bit more detail in the blog post I linked to above.

    1. Sit in a comfortable position holding your pendulum between your thumb and forefinger (using your dominant hand). Hold the pendulum out in front of you until it becomes motionless.
    2. If this is the first time you’re using your pendulum, you’ll want to learn how it communicates. To do this, you can simply say, “Please show me a yes response.” Patiently watch and wait for the pendulum to start moving; it might move side-to-side, back-and-forth, clockwise, or counterclockwise. Make note of the direction it moves. This is your “yes” response. Do the same thing for a “no” response. If you’d like, you can also ask for a “maybe” or “neutral” response. You can also ask questions you already know the answer to, such as your name, birthday, and where you live. Just make sure to formulate your questions in a “yes/no” format.
    3. Once you’re comfortable with your pendulum and understand how it communicates, you can begin asking it deeper questions. (Or keep it lighthearted, if you’d like.) Just remember to phrase your questions to have yes/no answers, and be as specific as possible to get clear answers
    4. You can also use your pendulum for help finding lost items or people. If you lost your keys, hold the pendulum over a map of your house and let it lead you to the right location. On a larger scale, you can hold the pendulum over a map of a city, state, or even the world.

    How to Use Crystals for Manifestation

    Manifestation is the practice of visualizing your dreams and vibrating at the frequency of your desires as if they’ve already come true. This belief is rooted in the idea that what we give out, we get back. So if you vibrate at the frequency of love, you attract more love to you. If you vibrate at the frequency of abundance, you attract more abundance to you. And if you vibrate at the frequency of joy, you attract more joyful experiences into your life.

    So how exactly do crystals help with manifestation? Crystals help you to become the energy of what it is that you want to manifest. They restore harmony and balance within you and empower you to live as your highest and most authentic self. If you want to manifest love, your chosen crystal isn’t simply helping you to attract love; it’s gently guiding you to release any blockages and barriers you may have to receiving love and helping you to heal any pain you may be holding onto. Your crystal will guide you to cultivate a deep sense of love within so that you truly become the embodiment of love. And by becoming the embodiment of love, you become a magnet for more love to flow into your life.

    To use crystals for manifestation, you’ll want to follow the steps outlined above for cleansing and programming crystals. My favorite way to program a crystal for manifestation is to hold it in my hands during meditation and visualize my dreams and desires coming true while feeling all of the positive, high-vibe emotions related to my dreams.

    Below, I’ve listed some of the powerful crystals that help with manifesting different emotions and experiences into your life. You can use any of the methods I outlined in the How to Use Crystals section to help you get started with using crystals to manifest what you desire. I will note that when it comes to using crystals for manifestation, I recommend being intentional with placement whenever possible. If you’re keeping a crystal nearby, think of the ways you can amplify the crystal’s powers. For instance, if you want to manifest financial abundance, you might keep a small Citrine crystal in your wallet or purse. Want to manifest creative ideas? Keep a Carnelian gemstone in your creative studio or with all of your art supplies.

    • Manifest Love: Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, Pink Topaz, Emerald
    • Manifest Friendship: Pink Opal, Citrine

    • Manifest Creativity: Carnelian, Citrine, Amethyst

    To boost your manifestation powers, pair the crystals above with Aventurine, Goldstone, or Jade, which are all powerful amplifier crystals.

    Best Crystals for Beginners

    If you’re just starting your crystal collection, I’ve listed some of the best crystals to start with below. However, don’t be afraid to walk into a crystal shop or scroll through an online crystal store and simply find the ones that speak to you. When I bought my first crystal, I knew absolutely nothing about crystals and simply admired them for their beauty. I picked out a beautiful Amethyst crystal that called to me, and it’s still one of my absolute favorites to this day.

    For centuries, many different religions have been using prayer beads as part of their spiritual practice. My grandpa was Catholic, and growing up, I remember seeing him pray with his rosary set between his fingers at least once a day. However, they have gained widespread acceptance among people of various spiritual backgrounds, and in many cultures, they’re used as part of a non-religious affiliated meditation practice.

    So what exactly are mala beads?

    Mala beads are a string of beads used as a meditation and mindfulness aid. Typically, they have 108 beads, and while each necklace or bracelet is unique, they generally all have the same standard components, such as the Guru Bead, the Tassel, Marker Beads, and Spacer Beads. We’ll define the function of these different components below.

    The most common use of mala beads is to recite a mantra during meditation. They’re also often used as a mindful breathing tool, and you can even use them as part of your manifestation practice. Many people who have a difficult time sitting still during meditation find that incorporating mala beads into their practice helps them to relax and cultivate a greater sense of mindfulness as they meditate.

    Below, I explain the various components of mala beads, how to use them, and how to choose the best mala beads for you. Plus, I link to some beautiful mala beads you can purchase today!

    Mala Beads: Components

    As mentioned above, the common components you’ll see in a mala bead necklace are the following:

    • 108 Counting Beads
    • Guru Bead
    • Marker Beads
    • Spacer or Decorative Beads
    • Knots
    • Charm
    • Tassel

    Let’s define the function of each of these components:

    108 Counting Beads

    Each mala necklace typically has 108 identical counting or primary beads, though some have less, which is okay. In meditation, it’s typical to hold the mala beads with one hand, draped across your fingers, and touch each counting bead with the thumb and middle finger one at a time, working your way through the entire necklace. You’ll complete one full inhale and exhale with each bead before moving to the next. (More on this practice in the How-To section below.)

    Guru Bead

    The Guru Bead is your starting point. It is typically bigger and has a distinct look from the other beads on the mala necklace or bracelet, though sometimes it’ll be the same type of bead as the marker beads. You’ll usually find this bead attached to the tassel.

    Marker Beads

    You’ll typically find four marker beads on a mala necklace, spaced at every 27th bead. These marker beads are typically slightly bigger than the counting beads and often a different color. The marker beads are a way to help you come back to your meditation if your mind has strayed. When you come across a marker bead, it reminds you to return to the present moment. In essence, this is a beautiful mindfulness tool. (Note that not all malas have marker beads.)

    Spacer/Decorative Beads

    The spacer beads are typically smaller (and often flatter) beads placed between larger beads. Depending on the unique necklace, you may see these in different sections, such as between the Guru bead and counting beads or before and after every marker bead. Note that not all mala necklaces have spacer beads. You do not count the spacer beads during your meditation.

    Knots

    In a typical mala necklace, you’ll find a small knot between each bead. The knot ensures that if the string breaks, the beads will not be lost. This makes your mala stronger, and the knots can also help with the movement of the mala during your meditation.

    Charm

    Your mala may or may not have a charm on the end, often in place of the tassel. The charm is typically ornamental, though you may choose one that has special meaning to you, such as a lotus flower or chakra symbol.

    Tassel

    While the tassel may seem at first appearance to be decorative, it’s actually steeped in deep spiritual symbolism. The strings of the mala loop through all of the beads, coming together through the Guru bead and finishing in the tassel. Some view this coming together of the strings to be symbolic of oneness, both with the Universe and each other. It can also be viewed as one’s desire to reach enlightenment. While I didn’t list it here, you can also view the string or thread that the beads are threaded on to be an important component of the mala, as it’s the link that brings everything together.

    How to Choose Mala Beads

    There isn’t a science to choosing your mala, which is a good thing if you’re like me and tend to follow your inner knowing when you make decisions.

    Choosing the right mala beads for you is truly an intuitive practice. As you start searching for the right one for you, you’ll find mala bead necklaces that come in all different colors and often are made of different materials. Some of these materials might include gemstones, pearls, wood, and lotus seeds.

    One of the most important questions to ask yourself as you’re searching for mala beads?

    “Do I find it beautiful?”

    It truly is that simple. Find the one that speaks to you. If you’re browsing through mala beads and one nudges your heart, it’s very likely you’ve found the perfect mala necklace for you.

    I know from personal experience, however, that it’s easy to get stuck in your own head when making these types of decisions. I have a history of over-analyzing my shopping choices, from what yearly planner I want to purchase to what pint of ice cream I want to buy (and promptly consume). I love to follow my heart, but sometimes my heart wants mint chocolate chip and cookies n’ cream.

    If you’re having trouble choosing, I find it helpful to step back and ask myself, “What are my intentions?” Do I want to use these mala beads to help me cultivate spirituality? Do I want to feel a connection with a higher power? Do I want to improve my meditations? Is this a way for me to feel more calm and relaxation? Once you’ve established your intentions, you may have a clearer picture of which mala beads you want to purchase.

    Finally, if you’re in a physical store, it’s always helpful to pick up the mala beads and get a feel for them within your fingers. Since you’re going to be holding these beads for an extended amount of time, you want to make sure you choose ones that feel good to you.

    Benefits of Using Mala Beads

    So why use mala beads? We’ve touched upon this a little bit above, but let’s dive into all the reasons mala beads can be beneficial to you:

    • Promotes Mindfulness: As you take conscious inhales and exhales with each bead before moving onto the next, you’re more likely to remain in the present moment throughout your meditation. And if your thoughts do drift, you’ll eventually reach one of the marker beads, which will gently bring you back to the here and now.
    • Can Improve Your Meditation: This is especially true if you have a hard time sitting still for extended amounts of time. If you find yourself wanting to move around and fidget while meditating, mala beads are the perfect tool for you to incorporate into your practice. It’s, in a sense, mindful fidgeting. (Kind of?)
    • Helps Improve Your Breathwork: I tend to be pretty good at consciously paying attention to my inhales and exhales while meditating . . . at least during the first few minutes. I’ve found that mala beads empower me to be more conscious of my breathing throughout my meditation. And to circle back to the two bulletpoints above, this helps to promote mindfulness and improves my meditation.
    • Connection With a Higher Power: The mala is more than just its individual components; it’s an entire unit brought together by the thread that links together the counting beads with the marker beads with the Guru bead with the tassel. This unity represents our own unity: unity with our higher selves, unity with each other, and unity with a higher power.

    How to Use Mala Beads

    Meditation

    While using mala beads in meditation may seem overwhelming at first, it’s actually an extremely simple and effective way to meditate that requires little to no technical ability.

    Before using mala beads in meditation, I want you to give yourself permission to be imperfect, especially as you’re first learning. It’s okay if you don’t follow all of the steps perfectly when you’re just starting. The most important thing is intention. If your heart is in the right place, and your intentions are positive, this is far more important than perfection.

    Furthermore, you can use your imperfections as a way to practice mindfulness, non-judgmental awareness, and compassion. Were you holding your mala beads with the incorrect fingers? Was your mind so distracted, you missed the marker beads? Notice, accept, and keep going.

    Here’s your step-by-step directions for how to use mala beads in meditation. I’ll discuss some alternative uses below.

    Breathing Meditation
    1. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. If you already have an ongoing meditation practice, you may already have a time and space that works for you. If you use the full 108 beads, this practice typically takes 30 minutes. If you decide not to use the full 108 beads, that’s okay. You can choose to stop at one of the marker beads instead.
    2. Drape your mala beads over your non-dominant hand. Make sure you feel comfortable and that the beads will be easy to move. With your thumb and middle finger of your dominant hand, gently touch the Guru bead. You typically do not use the index finger in this practice, as the index finger is connected to the Ego.
    3. Touch the first counting bead, and take one full inhale and exhale. Then, move to the second bead. Continue this process, inhaling and exhaling once per bead. You’ll stop when you make your way around back to the Guru bead.
    4. As mentioned above, you can choose to shorten your meditation by stopping at one of the marker beads. Alternatively, if you wish to extend your meditation, you can turn the mala around and start again. Note that it’s common practice not to jump over the Guru bead. So if you’re extending your meditation, rather than jumping over it to start back at the first counting bead, you’d turn the mala around and go in reverse.
    Mantra Meditation

    I was first introduced to using mala beads in meditation through the practice of mantra meditations. A mantra meditation is one in which you repeat a specific mantra throughout the meditation (traditionally, 108 times). This form of meditation is also known as japa meditation.

    Your chosen mantra should be something that resonates with you. It can be a sacred word, affirmation, divine name, or simply a word such as love or peace.

    Here are a few examples of possible mantras you could use:

    • Aum or Om (This has many rich and deep meanings. It is known as the word of God, the sacred sound of the Universe, and the union of the mind, body, and spirit.)
    • Om Shanti Om (Universal Peace)
    • Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (Peace of Mind, Body, and Speech)
    • Love
    • Peace
    • I am love.
    • I am peace.
    • I am worthy.
    • I am enough.
    • Love guides me.

    To perform a mantra meditation using mala beads, you’ll essentially take the same steps you do with the breathing meditation. However, in place of the conscious inhales and exhales, you’ll repeat your chosen mantra as you touch each bead. You can repeat your mantra either internally, at a whisper under your breath, or out loud. Do what makes you feel most comfortable.

    Alternative Uses

    While meditation is the most commonly discussed way to use mala beads, it’s not the only way! Here are a few other practices for using mala beads:

    • Wear Your Beads: Wearing your mala beads is more than just a fashion statement; it’s a profound practice to connect you to your highest self and cultivate mindfulness in your life. When you wear your beads, you can set the intention to remember the same peace and serenity you feel when you’re meditating. The most common ways to wear your beads are as a necklace or wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet.
    • Manifestation: The most powerful way to use mala beads for manifestation is to recite affirmations for manifestation as you touch each bead. To do this, you’d follow the same steps I wrote above for the breathing meditation, but in place of the conscious inhales and exhales, you’d recite a positive affirmation. As you do this, consciously make sure to feel the positive energy of the affirmation flowing through you. It’s up to you whether you’d like to recite different affirmations or repeat the same affirmations throughout.     • Gratitude Practice: This has become one of my personal favorite ways to use mala beads. Again, you’ll follow the same instructions as above for the breathing meditation, but here, you’d think of one thing you’re grateful for as you touch each bead. I know it may seem like 108 things is a lot, but it actually becomes pretty easy once you get going. For instance, you can think about each individual part of your body, from your eyes to your lips to your lungs, arms, stomach, legs, and feet (and everything in-between). You can also think about individual people, memories, and luxuries we often take for granted, like air conditioning and running water.

    What Is a Pendulum?

    A pendulum is a tool you can use to gain clarity and insight into a situation or problem you may be having. Specifically, it’s a string, cord, or chain with a small object at the end; most often, this object is a triangular shaped crystal, but you may also find pendulums that have objects made of wood, stone, metal, or glass on the end. (Just be sure not to use anything that could be magnetic, as this could affect the pendulum’s function.) There’s also typically another small, weighted object at the other end of the chain, though not always.

    Here’s an example of what a pendulum can look like:

    You may also hear the practice of using a pendulum referred to as crystal dowsing or pendulum dowsing. This is simply the act of using a pendulum to receive guidance, whether it be about making a decision in your life or even finding your lost car keys.

    If you’re looking to strengthen your intuitive powers, using a pendulum is a powerful practice to help you get in touch with your inner knowing. It’s also a formidable tool if you have trouble deciding whether to follow your head or your heart when making decisions. Many people believe that a pendulum is uniquely powerful in its ability to help you to make decisions by bringing together both the left and right sides of your brain. So instead of just following your head or your heart, the pendulum assists you in using the best parts of both in order to help you make the best possible decision for your journey.

    When Do I Use a Pendulum?

    A pendulum is most often used to gain insight and clarity when there are areas of uncertainty in your life. Anytime you have a question and are looking for help or advice, you can use a pendulum to receive guidance from a higher power.

    Now, to be more specific, what kind of guidance can a pendulum offer? If you’re trying to choose between pizza or sushi, should you ask the pendulum to make the final call? Or should you reserve using your pendulum for only the really big life questions, like whether you should quit your job or start a new relationship?

    Funny enough, I know people on both sides of the coin: some who only use their pendulum for the more lighthearted questions in life, and others who use it only for the deeper, more meaningful questions.

    Those who use it to help them make daily decisions about what to have for dinner or what Netflix show to watch usually say that they use their pendulum for these types of questions because they like to save the deeper, more meaningful stuff for other spiritual practices, like tarot.

    And those who use a pendulum for heavier questions often say that they don’t want to become dependent on the pendulum for daily decisions, and it’s a powerful source of guidance that shouldn’t be underestimated.

    So who’s right?

    Well, no one. And everyone.

    Do you have another practice, like tarot, that you like to use for guidance in your life? Then maybe you’ll want to just use the pendulum on those more lighthearted questions. But if you don’t have another practice, or if you view a pendulum as a powerful way to connect with your highest self and/or your spirit guides, then you can absolutely use your pendulum for meaningful insight regarding your life’s path.

    So again, there’s no right or wrong answer here. I do recommend, though, that when you’re first starting to use your pendulum, it doesn’t hurt to ask it some of those lighter questions like whether you should have cookies for dessert tonight. Not only will this help you to establish a connection with your pendulum, but it will help you develop trust in its guidance as well.

    Who is Answering My Questions?

    There are actually different schools of thought here, and none of them are necessarily right or wrong. Everything about this practice is extremely personal to you, so only you know deep inside who it is you’re speaking to.

    Here are some common beliefs about who is on the “other side” of the pendulum:

    • Your Higher Self: I deeply believe that your inner knowing always knows the way. Thus, it’s not a stretch to believe that your highest self – a self who is deeply connected to their intuition – can guide you to making the best decisions for you.
    • Your Spirit Guides: Spirit guides can come in the form of animals, angels, ancestors, goddesses, elemental spirits (like trees or mountains), and other beings. Whether or not you’ve connected with your spirit guides in the past, a pendulum offers a way to connect with your guides moving forward as they help you along your path.
    • The Universe: The Universe is the name I most often use to refer to a higher power in my life. You might also refer to this power as God, Source, Source Energy, Love, All That Is, or something else that feels right to you. When you receive guidance from a pendulum, you can view it as though you’re receiving guidance from the higher power in your life.

    It’s also completely okay to believe that all of the entities above have a hand in making a decision. You’re also empowered to call upon a specific entity, such as a spirit guide or guardian angel, when you seek their guidance.

    What Kind of Pendulum Should I Use?

    As mentioned above, most pendulums are made of some kind of cord or chain and have a small object at the end; this is most commonly seen as a triangular-shaped crystal, but other items such as gemstones and wood can be used as well.

    So is there one type of pendulum that works “better” than others?

    Truly, there’s not. In my experience, and in the experience of many others I’ve come across, the one that’s going to work best for you is the one that you get a good feeling about. If you’re in a crystal store looking at pendulums and one catches your eye, the decision can truly be as simple as picking it up and purchasing it on the spot.

    You may already have a favorite crystal, or one that has always held special meaning to you. If so, it’s completely fine to start your pendulum search knowing you want to incorporate that crystal somehow. So if amethyst is a special crystal to you, search for ones with a beautiful triangular-shaped amethyst at the end.

    Will it work better if you buy one with a crystal that has a meaning associated with the type of questions you’re going to ask? For instance, if you’re looking for love advice, should you purchase a pendulum that has a piece of rose quartz on the end? You can absolutely try this if this idea resonates with you, but don’t feel like you need to. I’ve had success using a single pendulum for all types of different questions.

    The only “wrong” answer would be to choose a pendulum that you don’t really like, or that you don’t get good vibes from.

    Where Do I Purchase a Pendulum?

    Typically, you can purchase a pendulum at a crystal shop or online through Etsy, Amazon, a crystal shop, or a store dedicated to selling spiritual goods.

    How Do I Use My Pendulum?

    Before You Start

    • Once you’ve chosen your pendulum, it’s important to cleanse and program your pendulum before using. I promise, this is easier than it sounds. You can cleanse your pendulum by setting it in nature for 24 hours (check online or in a crystal book to make sure the crystal is safe in the sun, and if there will be any rain or dew, make sure it’s safe to get wet); cleansing it with sage; placing it on top of or next to a piece of selenite or clear quartz (make sure they’re touching); or holding it under running water (again, making sure that your chosen crystal won’t be damaged by the water).
    • Charging your pendulum is even easier, but this is a personal practice, so make sure you have some quiet time to connect with your pendulum. Sit quietly for 10 to 15 minutes, holding it in your hands. This can be done in meditation, if you’d like. During this time, focus on your connection between you and your pendulum. You may choose to set an intention for your pendulum, or ask for support from the Universe, your higher self, or your spirit guides.

    Getting Started

    • The first time you ever use your pendulum, you’ll want to set aside some extra time for understanding how your pendulum communicates with you. It’s best to do this when you’re in a calm, relaxed state and when you’re not feeling rushed.
    • Sit in a comfortable position holding your pendulum between your thumb and forefinger. You’ll often hear people advise to hold it in your dominant hand, and that’s because it’s assumed you’ll be most comfortable holding it in your dominant hand. But if for some reason you’re more comfortable holding it in your non-dominant hand, that’s totally fine, too.
    • Hold the pendulum out in front of you. It may move for a minute before becoming motionless. If you want, you can gently help it to still by touching it with your free hand and bringing it to a place of stillness.

    Connecting With Your Pendulum

    • Now that you’re in a place of stillness, it’s time to connect with your pendulum and understand how it communicates. First thing’s first: relax! If you need to take a minute to consciously relax each part of your body, definitely do so. The more relaxed and at ease you feel, the easier your energy will flow, and the stronger your connection to your pendulum will be.
    • In order to start asking your pendulum questions, you need to know how it communicates. To do this, you can simply say, “Please show me a yes response.” Patiently watch and wait for the pendulum to start moving; it might move side-to-side, back-and-forth, clockwise, or counterclockwise. Make note of the direction it moves. This is your “yes” response. Do the same thing for a “no” response. If you’d like, you can also ask for a “maybe” or “neutral” response.
    • Now, it’s time to cultivate your connection a little deeper. Now that you know what a yes and no response look like, take some time to ask questions in which you already know the answer. Here are some examples of some questions you can ask:
      • “Is my name _____________ ?”
      • “Do I live in ______________ ?”
      • “Is my eye color ____________ ?”
    • Note that this may not be super straightforward right away. The movements of your pendulum may be subtle, or the “yes” and “no” may not look super different. That’s completely okay. It takes time to understand how your individual pendulum speaks to you. The more time you devote to this practice, the better you’ll get!

    Using Your Pendulum

    Once you’re comfortable with your pendulum and understand how it communicates with you, you can start using your pendulum to ask for life guidance. Note that you’ll need to phrase your questions to have “yes/no” answers. The simpler and more specific, the better. This will help you to more likely get a clear answer. I’ve found that it helps me to write down my questions in advance so I know exactly what I’m going to ask.

    Locating People/Items

    A fun alternative way to use a pendulum is to hold it over a map and ask the pendulum to locate someone or something for you. If you’re looking for a person or a pet, you can hold the pendulum over a map of your town. If you’re looking for your lost car keys, you can hold the pendulum over blueprints of your house. And if the item or person could be anywhere in the world, you can even hold it over a map of the world and see where it leads you.

    Like with the practice I discussed above, I’d recommend honing your relationship and understanding of how the pendulum works before diving right in. A fun practice is to ask about people or items that you already know the location for and see where the pendulum takes you. You can also ask where a specific place on the map is, like a city or a state.

    Again, the key here is to relax and allow the flow of energy to move through you. While I believe that using a pendulum is a sacred practice, you certainly don’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) tense or uptight about it. Let it be fun!

    Troubleshooting

    So you’ve followed the steps above, and for some reason, this practice still doesn’t seem to be working for you. Maybe you’re not getting clear guidance, or the answers you receive seem to be inconsistent.

    First thing’s first: it’s okay.

    The worst thing you can do right now is internally beat yourself up or speak negatively to yourself. I know how easy it is to compare yourself to other people and even allow yourself to believe that you’re “not meant” to do this practice.

    This isn’t true.

    As in most situations, just because you don’t see another’s struggles doesn’t mean they don’t exist. And when it comes to this journey of spirituality, surrender, and trust, I think most of us have struggled (multiple times) throughout the process. And you know what? That’s a good thing. I’m all about experiencing contrast because I believe that struggle not only leads to growth, but it allows us to appreciate our wins even more.

    So if you’re in a spot where you’re experiencing difficulty with this practice, have compassion for yourself. Choose to love yourself through every step of your journey. And let’s figure this out together.

    Here are some of the reasons why you may be experiencing difficulty with your pendulum:

    • You’re putting too much pressure on yourself. I’m putting this first because personally, this is what often leads me to feeling blocked, frustrated, and “not enough.” As a recovering perfectionist, I know what it’s like to want to be perfect in absolutely everything I do, and it’s all too easy to fall back in this trap. The best thing you can do for yourself is release the need to be perfect. Embrace your own messy imperfections. Next time you approach your pendulum practice, do so only when you’re in a state of calm, peace, and serenity.
    • And to go with that last statement, another major reason why the pendulum may not work is because you’re in a negative emotional state. I wouldn’t recommend ever doing this practice when you feel distracted, stressed, anxious, agitated, or any other state that may block the flow of energy through you. If you’ve set aside time for your practice and are feeling off, I would instead recommend doing a self-care activity that serves your wellbeing, like meditation or journaling.
    • You’re impatient. I know. This one’s a little frustrating, especially at the beginning, because you may not know yet how long it takes to receive guidance. But if you only waited a minute before giving up, I’d recommend waiting a little longer next time. I’ve found that I don’t always receive answers on my schedule or timeline, and ironically, the more I release the need to be in a hurry, the quicker they usually come anyway.
    • You’re distracted. Were you in the middle of your practice when your text message notifications started going off? Is a child yelling at you from outside the door? Did the neighbor’s car alarm just start going off? (I know, not your fault.) Try to minimize distractions as much as possible. I usually keep my phone in a different room when I’m working with my pendulum.
    • Your questions aren’t specific enough. If you’re not getting an answer, try rephrasing the question. Is it a two-part question? Break it down so you’re only asking one part at a time. Simplify as much as possible.
    • You and your pendulum aren’t compatible. For me, this is a last resort, especially if you felt a connection with this pendulum when you chose it. Before tossing it to the side for a new one, I’d recommend cleansing it again and charging it once more. Take some time to sit with the pendulum, holding it close to your heart. Relax. Let go of any doubts, and trust its guidance.

    Final Notes

    • You may have seen pendulum boards and cloths that you can use to direct the pendulum where to go for a yes, no, or maybe answer. These boards aren’t necessary, but if they help you, definitely feel free to go ahead and try one! I’ve linked to a few below.
    • You don’t have to limit yourself to using just one pendulum. You might have a collection of beautiful pendulums, and each time you sit down to practice, you can choose the one that speaks to you in the moment.

    Getting Started with Affirmation Cards

    Do you have a brand new deck of empowering affirmation cards that you’re antsy to crack open and start using as part of your daily routine? Or have you heard friends talk about their affirmation card decks and are curious to find out how they might benefit you?

    Whether or not you’ve used affirmation cards before, starting a new affirmation card routine is super easy, and there are tons of simple practices you can do that will support, inspire, and empower your highest self.

    But first: what exactly is an affirmation?

    An affirmation is, quite simply, a statement you make about yourself that you affirm to be true. An affirmation can actually be positive or negative, because we may also affirm negative statements about ourselves to be true, whether we do this consciously or not.

    For the purposes of this post, whenever I use the word affirmation, know that I’m talking about the positive kind. A positive affirmation is a present-tense statement designed to uplift and encourage while boosting self-belief and supporting your overall wellbeing.

    And one of the best ways to use affirmations is through affirmation cards. Affirmation cards come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors, and they often have anywhere between 40 to 60 cards in a deck. You can start out with just one affirmation card deck or alternate between decks every week or every month. If you don’t mind a little organized chaos, you can even mix decks together to incorporate them all into your daily routine.

    Below are seven powerful practices for using affirmation cards in your daily routine.     How to Use Affirmation Cards

    Morning Routine

    Morning is my favorite time to use affirmation cards because it always sets me up for a positive mindset as I start my day.

    One of the most popular ways to use affirmation cards is to pick one card from the deck at random as your chosen affirmation of the day. As you read the positive affirmation on the card, allow yourself to truly feel the uplifting words within every cell of your being. And furthermore, allow yourself to truly believe the words. Trust that this affirmation came to you today for a reason.

    Here are a few more things you can do with your chosen affirmation card:

    • Spend time reflecting. What do the words mean to you? How can you embody the feelings within the words throughout your day? How can this positive affirmation carry you through your day? If you want, you can even spend some time journaling your thoughts about this affirmation.
    • Carry the card with you. Slide the card into your purse or bag, and set the intention to look at it and feel the positive words within you throughout the day. (You can even set phone reminders, if that helps.) If you work at a desk, you can also choose to set the affirmation next to your computer monitor so you can be reminded of it during your day.
    • Pull it back out before bed. Keep the affirmation out where it’s easy to access, and then in the evening, take one final look at it. Once again, let the positivity of the words radiate through you. If you want, you can spend some time reflecting on all the ways you embodied this affirmation during the day. Just remember: no judgment. If the card said, “I am calm, patient, and peaceful,” and you lost your cool at some point during the day, that’s okay! Have compassion for yourself. That doesn’t mean you’re not calm, patient, and peaceful. It just means you’re a human being who had a human experience, which I encourage you to embrace with love and understanding.

    Create Affirmation Art

    Many of the affirmation card decks I link to below are so beautiful, you could consider them art. So why not treat them like art and display them in a place where you can see them throughout the day?

    There are tons of ways you can do this. One of the easiest ways is to use a whiteboard with magnets or a bulletin board with pushpins, though I’d be careful to use the pins around the edges of the cards as opposed to sticking them through the cards. A bonus of using one of these boards is it’s easy to change the affirmations as often as you’d like.

    Another fun and creative way to hang your affirmation cards is with some twine (or some kind of rope/string) and clothespins. You can hang the twine/rope across a wall, a shelf, or even in rows across an old, empty picture frame, and use the clothespins to hold up your chosen affirmations. Again, this method makes it super easy to change out the cards whenever you feel like mixing it up.

    However you choose to display your art, make sure it’s somewhere you’ll see at least a couple times a day, and set the intention to spend a couple minutes each day reading the positive affirmations and affirming the words into your being.

    Journal Your Affirmation(s)

    I mentioned this under the “Morning Routine” section, but there are tons of ways to take your journaling practice even further.

    While it’s common for many to journal in the morning (myself included), you can do these practices any time of day.

    • Pick three to five affirmation cards. Set them in front of you as you pull out your journal to write. Write each affirmation five times, making sure to truly feel the affirmation within as you write down the words. You can stop here, or you can take it one step further and reflect on what each affirmation means to you and/or how you’re going to embody this affirmation throughout your day.
    • Choose one affirmation card. Write all the ways in which you encompass the positive words on this card. For instance, let’s say you choose the affirmation, “I accept all of myself.” What are some examples in your life of times when you bravely accepted all of yourself? In what ways do you show yourself acceptance every day? You could list all the inner and outer parts of you and how you love and accept each and every part. You could also write about how you accept your past history. Write about all the ways in which you and this positive affirmation are aligned.
    • Choose one affirmation card to reflect upon. Again, let’s use the example “I accept all of myself.” Reflect upon what this chosen affirmation means to you. In this example, what does it mean to accept all of yourself? In what ways does accepting all of yourself equate to loving all of yourself? What practices can you incorporate in your life that would promote more self-acceptance? Why is it important to accept all of yourself?

    Depending on how much time you have, you could also combine the practices above to dig deeper into each affirmation.

    Gift Individual Cards to Loved Ones

    If, like me, giving gifts is your love language, then you’ll love this thoughtful and inexpensive way to show the people in your life your love, care, and appreciation.

    Choose a card in your deck that reminds you of your chosen recipient. Most of the decks have somewhere between 40 – 60 cards in them, so you’ll have plenty of cards to choose from. I like the idea of writing a little note with it, telling them why you picked it for them. If the person’s a coworker, you could leave it on their desk for them to find in the morning. If it’s a friend, you could secretly put it in their purse for them to discover. You can also give the recipient their gift in person and tell them why you chose this particular card for them.

    Hide Cards to Find Later

    You absolutely deserve to gift yourself some affirmation cards, too!

    A fun way to do this is to hide cards in spots where you don’t look very often, such as a filing cabinet, a desk drawer, a bookshelf, or elsewhere. If you want, you can put the card in an envelope first with a loving handwritten note to yourself written on the front of the envelope. When you find the card later, open it up and be reminded of how worthy, incredible, and loved you are.

    Trade Cards with a Friend

    Do you have a close friend in your life who you don’t get to see nearly enough? This is a great way to stay in touch while uplifting and supporting one another. You and your friend can both purchase one or more affirmation card decks. At an agreed upon time (i.e. once a week or once a month), choose an affirmation for that friend and write them a sweet note detailing why your friend embodies the beautiful words on the card. Then, slip it into the mail. In a couple days, both of you will be getting some positive, empowering words in your mailbox! You can slide this new card into your current deck(s) or hang it somewhere you’ll see until the next one comes in!

    While I love the idea of trading physical cards and getting mail, you can also snap a pic of the card and exchange texts with your friend on a weekly basis. Heart-shaped emojis completely encouraged!

    Pull a Card Before Bed

    Are you someone who spends a lot of time at night replaying events of the day or worrying about tomorrow? Embracing positive affirmations is a powerful way to shift your mindset at night. Before bed, pull a card and read the words to yourself, making sure to inhale all the positive vibes of the affirmation. If you want, you can spend some time journaling or reflecting upon the chosen affirmation. Then, when you go to bed, commit to repeating the affirmation to yourself when you close your eyes. If you catch your brain shifting back into worry-mode, simply pause, release your thoughts, and repeat your chosen affirmation. Do this as much as you need until you fall asleep.

    How to Create a Meditation Table

    A meditation table is a dedicated sacred space that promotes feelings of peace, calm, and tranquility within. It usually consists of a table as the foundation; on top of the table are chosen objects that possess significant meaning to you. The space you create should serve and support your total mind, body, and spirit. This is a place that nourishes your soul, feeds your spirit, and helps you to connect with your highest, most authentic self.

    So why a meditation table? And how exactly do you use it?

    It’s likely that you have moments in your life when you feel disconnected with yourself. Sometimes, despite our best intentions, external influences cause us to feel stressed, worried, anxious, and unsteady. When this happens, you may lose your place of groundedness and ease.

    That’s why it’s important to have a place that feels completely safe to you: where you can come home to yourself.

    You might call your meditation table your altar, sacred space, shrine, or another term that feels right to you. And despite its name, you don’t have to solely use your meditation table for the practice of meditating. You might choose to sit at your meditation table in the morning to set daily intentions, pull affirmation cards, or write in your gratitude journal. You might also choose to come to this space anytime you seek serenity and solitude.

    Below are some questions and answers on how to get started with creating your perfect meditation table.

    Does my meditation table have to be a certain size or shape?

    Absolutely not. Your meditation table can be as big or as small as you choose. Remember, bigger doesn’t always mean better. If you have only a small corner to dedicate to your sacred space, that’s more than enough. Choose a meditation table that fits your needs; dimensions and aesthetics are completely up to you.

    What do I put on my meditation table?

    You’re probably going to get sick of me saying this by the end of this blog post, but I don’t think I can emphasize this enough: choose items that resonate with you. This meditation table belongs solely to you, and all that matters is the feelings the items bring when you look at and/or touch them. You can put as much or as little on your table as you’d like; in fact, you don’t have to put anything on it at all if your soul desires a clean, empty space. Below, I’ve linked to suggestions for items you can place on your meditation table, including candles, crystals, books, affirmation cards, decor, and more. Some of these items might resonate with you, or you might choose to go in a different direction. The most important thing is to choose items that help you to connect with your inner self and that bring a sense of peace, calm, security, groundedness, love, and connection with yourself and the world around you.

    How do I set up my meditation table?

    Set up your table in a way that feels calming to you. If you like everything neat and organized, then you might set it up so it looks balanced and orderly. If you think a little messiness is kind of beautiful, then you might let your inner creative take the reigns and place items wherever your heart wants them to go. There’s nothing wrong with googling how other people set up their tables, but remember that this is your sacred space. The most important thing is how it makes you feel.

    How do I use my meditation table?

    When you create your meditation table, take some time to set a purpose and intention for how you want to use this space. You can, of course, meditate in front of your table. As I mentioned above, you might also choose to come here in the morning to set intentions, recite affirmations, and express gratitude. When you’re seeking answers, this might be a place to look for them within. You might also like to sit at your meditation table after work to release the day and invite a sense of calm and peace into your evening.

    Below, I’ve linked to items you can use to create your sacred space. Know that this is just the beginning of what’s possible for your meditation table, and your options are limitless. You may already have a piece of furniture in your home that would work perfectly for this function. If you’re a DIYer, this is a great opportunity to get creative as you check out local yard sales and thrift stores for the inspiring piece that speaks to you. Sand, stain, paint, or leave it perfectly imperfect: whatever feels right to you. (If you’re worried about the table holding onto past energy from previous experiences and owners, I’d recommend using sage on the table first.)     Books are one of the best all-around gift ideas because they’re thoughtful, considerate, and last forever. Because there are so many books to choose from, it shows a lot of care when you select a particular book for someone. Of course, the vast amount of choices can also make it overwhelming to pick just one or two. Below are some of my favorite spirituality-centered books on topics like mindfulness, manifestation, faith, joy, enlightenment, and creating a beautiful life.

    Journals and Notebooks

    Journaling is one of the most powerful ways to truly connect to your inner self. For guided journaling, I love ones that have inspiring prompts like the Super Attractor journal. A gratitude journal is great for someone who may be short on time as it encourages them to write just a few things they’re thankful for every morning. And I’m a bit of a compulsive notebook buyer, so I also love the gorgeous notebooks for journaling, taking notes, and displaying as beautiful office decor.

    Affirmation & Oracle Cards

    Oracle cards are essentially spiritual card decks that aren’t confined to super strict rules or structure. When you choose a card, you follow your intuition to decipher its meaning. The meaning you perceive or interpret might be different than what someone else interprets, and that’s totally okay. Oracle cards make a wonderful gift because they allow the recipient a way to truly get in touch with their intuition, and you can find some absolutely beautiful ones like the card decks below. If you’re unsure about standard oracle decks, I definitely recommend affirmation decks as they’re truly uplifting and inspiring, and they make for a super thoughtful gift.

    I’ve seen a lot of different types of affirmation and tarot cards, and Gabrielle Bernstein’s are some of the most beautiful and inspiring ones out there. The Spirit Junkie cards are her latest deck, and it might just be my new favorite.     When I discovered this I AM A Leader: A 90-Day Leadership Journal for Kids, I was surprised to find that mindfulness and gratitude are central concepts in its pages. It’s filled with gratitude and reflection prompts and helps kids reflect upon positive concepts like gratitude, confidence, and growth mindset. It also includes a Happiness Tracker and an Energy Tracker as well as a guide to a 3-minute mindfulness practice.

    Totem Game

    I love and adore this game so, so much. This is the perfect game if you have multiple kids, or if you’re gifting this to a family with multiple kids. Totem is a card game in which the cards have positive attributes and traits on them. (For instance, “You listen in a sincere and genuine manner.”) Players choose cards that they think fit you, and then you put the cards in order of what you think best fits you.
