    What Are Chakras?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disk.” A commonly accepted definition for the word chakra is a wheel of energy in your body. You might also think of it like a vortex of energy within you. What makes it confusing is that this vortex isn’t actually a physical thing like your bones or organs. You can’t see your chakras in an x–ray. Rather, you experience them through feelings, sensations, and your own inner knowing.

When talking about chakras, we typically focus on the seven main ones in your body: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. However, your body actually has at least 114 energy centers in your body, and some people believe there to be more.

So what exactly does a chakra do? Ideally, your life force, or prana, is flowing to and through your chakras at all times (through energy channels called nadis), which allows you to live in alignment with your highest self. Energy is meant to flow, and when your chakras are open, your life force energy can flow freely through your various energy centers. (You might hear the words chakras and energy centers used interchangeably.)

Below, I’ve listed eight of the best chakra books available, both for beginners and those looking to expand their knowledge about chakras, energy healing, and their body’s energy system.

    Chakra Healing

When you think of the effects that food has on your body, it’s likely that you immediately think of the physical impacts; through conscious food choices, you can incorporate food into your diet that might help you lose or gain weight and/or muscle.

But your food choices don’t just affect your physical self; they have a profound impact on your mental, emotional, and spiritual self as well. In fact, your mind, body, and spirit are all affected every single day by your food intake in ways that you may not even see.

That’s why intentionally choosing food that works with your internal energy is so important: because the effects extend beyond your physical self and digestive system and have an impact on your entire well-being.

Below, you’ll find a list of healing foods for each of your body’s energy centers along with a handy chart you can print or save to your phone. If you want to connect with a particular chakra, incorporate foods into your snacks and meals that correspond with that chakra. Be intentional with this practice. For instance, if you’re connecting with your root chakra and have added sweet potatoes to one of your meals, set the intention to connect with your root chakra before you start eating. As you eat, remain mindful of the energy in and around your root chakra. You might also internally recite some root chakra affirmations as you’re eating. (You can find links to affirmations for each of your body’s energy centers in the sections below.)

I’ve added some links in the box below if you want to learn more about your chakra system and the seven main chakras. For an overview on all the chakras, you can check out my post on the chakra colors and meanings here.

Sacral Chakra Healing: Open & Balance the Sacral Chakra

    What is the Sacral Chakra?

Located in your lower abdomen, your sacral chakra is your energy center for creativity, joy, prosperity, passion, openness, and playfulness. An open and balanced sacral chakra means you embrace your creativity, have high self-esteem, and are able to relax and have fun, releasing work to engage in play. Pleasure is a word often associated with the sacral chakra, as having an open sacral chakra means you find delight in all of life’s pleasures.

This is also the energy center for sensuality and sexuality. When energy is flowing freely through this chakra, you’re more likely to have a strong, positive relationship with your body. You honor your desires and have healthy intimate relationships with others.

The sacral chakra is about more than creativity and high self-esteem, though. When this energy center is balanced, you feel more open, adaptable, compassionate, and forgiving. You’re honest with yourself and others, and you’re able to let go of grudges that don’t serve your well-being. Because you have a strong and healthy relationship with yourself, you know that holding onto negative emotions such as anger, resentment, and bitterness only harms you in the long run, so you’re able to let these things go in order to take care of your mind, body, and spirit.

In this post, we’ll look deeper into the sacral chakra and discuss 14 powerful practices for opening, balancing, and healing your second energy center. First, here are some of the key attributes of the sacral chakra:

    • Sanskrit Name: Svadhishthana (Sva = “self”; shthana = “place”)
    • Location: Lower abdomen (below your navel)
    • Color: Orange
    • Body Parts: Womb, Bladder, Lower Back, Reproductive Organs
    • Symbol: Six-petaled lotus with a moon crescent in the center
    • Element: Water
    • Mantra: VAM
    • Affirmation: I feel
    • Balanced Attributes: Creative, Joyful, Playful, Prosperous, Stable, Sexual, Sensual, Passionate, Open, Energetic, Honest, Forgiving
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Lack of Creativity, Unstable, Insecure, Anxious, Scattered, Lazy, Fearful, Disconnected, Depressed, Unmotivated, Negative, Lack of Sensuality
    • Fundamental Need: Emotional flow, desire, sexuality

    Sacral Chakra Healing

If you live in a culture that prioritizes work over play, sacral chakra healing can be an especially important and profound self-care practice. It’s also important if you grew up with a negative relationship your own body, or if you’re not fully comfortable in your sensuality and sexuality.

So how does sacral chakra healing really work? First, it’s important to understand your chakra system and the energy within your body. While you often only hear about the seven main chakras, there are actually 114 chakras throughout your body. (And some believe there to be more!) These chakras are connected by energy channels called nadis. You can think of nadis kind of like roads that vehicles travel upon. Energy travels through these energy channels to get to each of your chakras.

In a perfect system, your energy is flowing freely all the time. Unfortunately, energy often becomes stuck inside this system, causing your chakras to become either overactive or underactive. Ignoring these blockages won’t make them go away. To get energy moving again, you need to engage in healing practices to help stimulate your life force (prana).

The type of healing you need will depend on the level of blockage you’re experiencing. For instance, if you’re experiencing some writer’s block or feeling excess negativity within, but this isn’t normal for you, meditation and gentle movement through yoga may help to get the energy flowing again. But if your blockage goes deeper, you may need to engage in profound inner child healing practices in order to get to the source of the blockage so that you can work with it, release it, and stimulate the free flow of energy within.

Below, you’ll find 14 powerful healing practices to open, balance, and activate your sacral chakra. You can use any of these practices as part of your daily routine, or you can choose a few when you feel like your sacral chakra is blocked and imbalanced. I’ve also linked to several other posts that provide further understanding into the healing practices on this list.

And for deeper insight into chakras as well as guidance on profound chakra healing, check out my Ultimate Chakra Healing Bundle, which includes a Chakra Healing eBook, Chakra Healing Workbook, and 8-Week Chakra Healing Guide. You can also discover more in my online shop.

    Get Creative

How often do you make space in your life for creativity?

    Actually, let me rephrase that.

How often do you make space in your life for creativity that has absolutely no end goal? It’s not meant to be productive. It’s not meant to be good. And it’s definitely not meant to be perfect. It’s just pure, unrestricted, joyful creativity.

This is the type of creativity you feel when you’re in a total flow state. And there’s a good chance it’s not the type of creative outlet you’re best at. For instance, I’m a writer. I’m writing blog posts and articles every single day, and I also often work on fiction stories in my spare time. But even then, I have a very hard time letting go of my inner perfectionist. So when I’m working with my sacral chakra, I never turn to writing to stimulate my creativity. Rather, I often do something that I’m not very objectively good at, like painting. I embrace the fun and play of it all, and I let go and allow my inner creative to guide me wherever she wants to go.

Embracing your creative flow is one of the most beneficial practices you can do when working with your sacral chakra. Do something you feel good about that isn’t related to your job and that you don’t feel the need to be perfect when doing. Let it be both messy and beautiful!

    Spend Time In Water

The sacral chakra’s associated element is water, and there are several powerful ways you can use water to connect with this energy center. My personal favorite practice is to take a luxurious bubble bath. When your sacral chakra is open and balanced, you have a positive relationship with your body and embrace your own divine sensuality. A warm bubble bath is the perfect way to honor your body. I also love to pair this practice with aromatherapy and crystal healing, which you’ll read more about below. Turn off the lights, place your sacral chakra healing crystals around the tub, and use cinnamon-scented candles or essential oils to set the mood for profound sacral chakra healing.

(Not a bath person? Get some ideas for shower meditations here.)

Of course, you can also find water all over nature, which is one of our greatest teachers and healers of all. Oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams all offer opportunities to connect with your sacral chakra. If you’re not too keen on getting in the water, that’s okay! Even sitting near the water while meditating, journaling, or simply sitting in silence can offer meaningful healing.

    Mirror Work

Mirror work can be a beneficial practice for your entire chakra system as a whole, but I especially like it for sacral chakra healing because it can help build self-esteem and connect you to your body, which are all important aspects of the sacral chakra. What does mirror work entail exactly? First, stand in front of a mirror and look yourself in the eyes. If possible, try to use a mirror that shows at least half your body. Bring a gentle smile to your lips. As you’re looking yourself in the eyes, start complimenting yourself. Affirm all the things you love about yourself, both inside and out. If you’re complimenting your arms, you can gently brush your fingertips against your arms in loving reverence. The same goes for your face, chest, legs, and all the rest of your divine being. If you’re feeling super confident, you can even start dancing in front of the mirror. Your dancing can be fun and joyful or sultry and sensual; do what feels most comfortable to you! When you’re about done, look yourself in the eyes and tell yourself I love you. Repeat this practice as often as you want.

    Uplifting Affirmations

Positive affirmations are a powerful way to lift your vibrations and align yourself with the energy you want to attract. For sacral chakra healing, focus on words that affirm your joy, creativity, passion, prosperity, openness, sensuality, and sexuality. Use these affirmations throughout your day.

Below, you can find some sacral chakra affirmations to get you started. For more, check out my post, 35 Sacral Chakra Affirmations to Live a Passionate Life.

    • I am creative, passionate, and inspired.

    Dance

When your sacral chakra is blocked, you may feel withdrawn, tense, negative, and/or fearful. Dancing is one of the best ways to allow energy to flow freely throughout your body as you release any tension you may be holding onto within. Does the idea of dancing in front of people feel too overwhelming? That’s okay! This practice can often be most beneficial when you’re completely alone. If you’re at home or somewhere safe, play some music that resonates with you. It can be fast and upbeat or slow and sensual. You can set the mood by turning off lights, lighting candles, and/or changing into clothes that make you feel your best. Then, all you have to do is simply dance. Let loose, knowing you are completely safe. You can move in any way that feels right to you, but I do recommend connecting to your hips and lower abdomen from time to time in order to stimulate the energy in and around your sacral chakra.

    Meditation

There are several ways you can use meditation to connect with your sacral chakra and guide you toward profound healing. One sacral chakra healing practice is to envision a bright orange glowing orb in your lower abdomen. As you breathe in, see the orb getting bigger. As you breathe out, see it growing brighter. You can also recite some uplifting affirmations as you do this.

You might also choose to envision living a day in the life as your truest, most authentic self with an open and balanced sacral chakra. How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? What do you do during the day? How do you speak to yourself and others? How do you incorporate play, fun, creativity, and joy into your day? How do you feel about your body? See all the details play out in your visualization, and feel the positive feelings of having an open sacral chakra.

Write a Letter to Your Inner Child

When you were a child, was using your imagination encouraged or discouraged? Did you engage in creative activities? Did you find creativity to be fun, or were you often preoccupied with being perfect? Did anyone ever say anything to discourage your creativity? Were you forced to grow up too fast? Take some time to sit and write a letter to your inner child. Affirm to this part of you that it’s safe to be creative. Encourage them to play more and to do things that bring them joy. Tell your inner child everything he or she needs to hear regarding play, fun, creativity, and joy. Build up their self-esteem. Was there something you always wished an adult would tell you? Tell it to yourself now.

    Journaling

Journaling is one of my personal favorite practices for connecting with all of my chakras. If you can, I recommend making journaling a sacred time in which you’re not interrupted. If you have a quiet spot in your home, set some time aside to go there so you can connect with your inner self. You might even choose to surround yourself with crystals, essential oils, and other healing tools.

To work with the sacral chakra, you can use journal prompts that are dedicated to connecting with the sacral chakra. To get started, you can check out my post, 30 Journal Prompts to Open and Heal the Sacral Chakra. Another powerful journaling practice is to write down sacral chakra affirmations, feeling the uplifting and positive emotions of the words as you write them. You can even make your journaling a time to get creative. Do you have an awesome idea for a movie, book, or TV show? Write down the story in your journal! (Just make sure to release your inner perfectionist during this time.)

    Visualization

Visualization can be a powerful tool in connecting to your inner self, healing your energy, and manifesting the life you desire. One reason it can be especially powerful for sacral chakra healing is that it allows you to engage with your imagination. If you haven’t used your imagination much since you were a child, this can be an especially profound healing method for you. There are several ways you can use visualization to connect with the sacral chakra. You can use any of the exercises outlined in the Meditation section above, or you can simply allow your imagination to take over your visualization and see where it leads. Since water is the element connected to the sacral chakra, you might also visualize yourself playing beneath a waterfall or floating in a river. Imagine that the water is rinsing away all negative and blocked energy and healing your life force within.

    Yoga

Yoga is a profound healing practice for all of your chakras, but I especially love it for working with the sacral chakra because it allows you to connect with your body in a personal and powerful way. For sacral chakra healing, make sure to incorporate hip-opening poses into your practice. During your practice, breathe into your lower abdomen and focus on connecting with your sacral chakra. Let this practice be a sacred time in which you honor your body and treat it with respect and reverence.

Here are some poses (asanas) you can incorporate into your practice when working with the sacral chakra:

    • Pigeon
    • Butterly
    • Cobra
    • Frog
    • Goddess squat

    Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural plant extracts for therapeutic healing. This is one of my favorite underutilized healing practices, and it’s super easy to incorporate into your daily routine. For sacral chakra healing, use citrusy and/or spicy scents such as Orange, Tangerine, Cinnamon, Bergamot, Neroli, Cypress, Cardamom. For more information on how to use essential oils to heal the chakras, check out my post, A Guide to Essential Oils for Chakra Healing.

    Color Therapy

In chakra healing, color therapy is the practice of surrounding yourself with the corresponding color of the chakra you want to open, activate, and/or heal. For sacral chakra healing, that means immersing yourself in all things orange. You can eat orange food, write in orange pen, wear orange clothing, and surround yourself in orange items. One of my favorite color therapy practices is to write empowering affirmations on colored post-it notes. So for sacral chakra healing, you might write uplifting sacral chakra affirmations on orange post-its.

One of the most important things to remember here is to be intentional with this practice. Choose your items with the intention of healing your sacral chakra. You might find it helpful to play an affirmation game with your color therapy practice. For instance, if you decide to wear a piece of jewelry that has an orange gemstone, say an uplifting sacral chakra affirmation every time you touch or see this item. You can also decide that anytime you see an orange item while you’re out and about during the day, you’ll internally say a sacral chakra affirmation or express gratitude for an aspect of yourself related to the sacral chakra.

    Food

Food can have a profound influence on your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual self. While we often think of food as primarily affecting the body, it also affects the mind and spirit as well. For sacral chakra healing, add your favorite spices (such as cinnamon) to drinks and meals. Add orange produce such as carrots, mangoes, and oranges to your snacks or meals. You can also add sweet, antioxidant-filled honey to your tea, yogurt, or toast. (Or however you best like to savor it.)

    Crystals & Gemstones

Each chakra is linked to powerful crystals that help you to connect to your energy centers and stimulate the effortless flow within. For sacral chakra healing, you can use crystals that stimulate creativity and passion, such as Orange Calcite, Jasper, Carnelian, Red Tiger’s Eye, Coral, and Fire Opal. Use these crystals in meditation, as jewelry, in crystal grids, in a sacred space, or keep them with you throughout the day. For more on how to cleanse, program, and use crystals, you can read my post on all things crystal related here. And for more on chakra healing crystals, click here.

    What is the Root Chakra?

Located at the base of your spine, the root chakra is your body’s energy center for stability, safety, strength, security, groundedness, and inner peace. Your root chakra acts as your foundation. This is where you build your strength, power, and steadiness so that the flow of energy can easily move freely throughout your entire body.

A good metaphor is to think of your root chakra like the roots of a tree. With strong roots, you’ll remain stable, firm, and supported, no matter which way the wind blows. And that’s truly what your root chakra does for you; with an open and balanced root chakra, you’ll remain grounded, centered, and calm, no matter what’s going on in your external world.

Does this mean everything’s perfect all the time? Absolutely not. A balanced root chakra signifies that you feel firm in your place in life, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have hopes and dreams for something more. However, because you feel so solid and steady, you’re not desperate or distressed as you wait for your dreams to manifest. Rather, you’re able to let go, trust, and ground yourself to the present moment, knowing that all is truly going to be okay.

In this post, we’ll dive deep into root chakra healing and discuss 14 powerful practices for opening, balancing, and healing the root chakra. First, here are some of the key attributes of the root chakra:

    Root Chakra Healing

Even though each of your body’s energy centers has its own distinct role, it’s important to remember that all of your chakras, along with your life force (prana) and energy channels (nadis) act as one whole system. When one is blocked, it affects the rest of your chakra system, causing other energy centers to become underactive or overactive.

That’s why root chakra healing is one of the most profound self-care practices you can do for your mind, body, and spirit. As your foundation, it’s important to maintain an open and balanced root chakra in order to keep your entire chakra system in balance. I like to think of it like this: your root chakra represents your basic needs, like warmth, rest, and security. If one of these basic needs isn’t being met, it would be hard to to cultivate a deeper relationship with your other chakras and feelings of creativity, passion, love, and intuition.

But when you take the time to create a solid and stable foundation, you give these other aspects of your being a chance to thrive.

Below, you’ll find 14 powerful root chakra healing practices to open, balance, and activate this important energy center. You can use these practices as part of your daily routine, or pick some to do when you’re feeling imbalanced and misaligned.

Ensure Basic Needs Are Being Met

The root chakra acts as your foundation, and at your most basic level, before anything else, you have physiological and safety needs that need to be met in order to have a solid and stable foundation. These needs include food, water, warmth, rest, security, and safety. While the rest of the practices on this list are powerful on their own, nothing can bring you long-term healing if your basic needs aren’t being met.

Unfortunately, depending on your life situation, this isn’t always easy. What do you do if food isn’t always readily available? What if you don’t feel safe and secure in your environment? What if your busy schedule doesn’t allow for rest? There’s no easy, one-size-fits-all answer here. So this is the best advice I can give you: don’t be afraid to ask for and accept help from others.

And also don’t be afraid to ask for help from the Universe. For most of my life, I wasn’t someone who would talk to a higher power. It wasn’t until recent years that I began sitting down and handing over my worries to the Universe. I don’t say this to make you feel good; I say this because it’s my authentic truth: every single time I’ve actually paused and spoken to the Universe, my requests have always been answered. Sometimes, in minutes. Sometimes, hours. Sometimes, days. But never, ever am I ignored.

    Meditation

Meditation is a powerful practice for healing all of your chakras, but there’s something especially powerful when it comes to root chakra healing. Meditating in the morning can be especially profound because it allows you to get grounded, centered, and stable as you start your day. Use meditation to connect with your foundation and to breathe calm, strength, and peace into every cell of your body.

A simple breathing meditation can be effective in root chakra healing. You might also choose to connect with your root chakra by envisioning it as a bright red glowing orb at the base of your spine. As you breathe in, see the orb getting bigger. As you breathe out, see it growing brighter. You can also recite some grounding affirmations as you do this (see below).

    Grounding Affirmations

The use of positive affirmations can be a powerful healing practice that supports your total well-being: mind, body, and spirit. For root chakra healing, focus on affirmations specifically dedicated to helping you feel grounded, stable, secure, calm, strong, peaceful, and centered. You can recite affirmations as you wake up in the morning, during meditation, as you commute to work, in your journal, as you wind down for the evening, and any time you need to take a step back and allow a wave of calm to wash over you.

I’ve written some of my favorite root chakra affirmations below. Also be sure to check out my post, 35 Root Chakra Affirmations to Remain Strong, Steady, and Grounded.

    • I am safe and secure.
    • I am rooted in this present moment.
    • I am strong, steady, and grounded.
    • I have access to all the resources I need to survive and thrive.
    • I am equipped with all the tools I need to succeed.
    • Everything I need comes to me at exactly the right place and time.
    • I vibrate powerful, abundant, peaceful energy and attract this same energy in return.
    • Deep inner peace is my natural state.
    • Even when the world around me feels chaotic, I remain rooted firmly to the ground.
    • All my needs are always met.
    • I have everything I need.

    Connect to the Earth

The root chakra is associated with the earth, and one of the most powerful healing activities you can perform is to immerse yourself in nature and let your bare feet touch the ground. You might also find a quiet spot to sit outside where you can journal, meditate, or just simply be. If you’re a gardener, you might choose to go outside and work in your garden, allowing your bare hands to dig into the earth. Nature is one of the greatest healers in the universe. When you take the time to connect with the earth, you connect with your roots, your foundation, and the truest, most authentic part of you.

    Breathing Exercises

It isn’t always possible to stop what you’re doing to meditate in the middle of the day, but a breathing exercise is a more than suitable replacement that can help you to regain your feelings of calm, balance, and inner peace. Alternative nostril breathing is one of my favorite breathing practices, as this simple yet profound practice is known to calm the mind, reduce anxiety and stress, and promote overall well-being.

Here’s another simple breathing exercise to help you feel centered and grounded:

Inhale deeply to a count of four. Pause for a brief moment when you reach the end of your breath. Then exhale for a count of five. Pause at the end of your exhale. Then repeat the cycle. Do this as many times as needed to calm your mind and ground you to the present moment.

    Gratitude

As you go about your day, notice all the things that contribute to your open and balanced root chakra. These things might include the locks on your doors that keep you safe; the money in your bank account; the food in your kitchen; the blankets that keep you warm; your strong, healthy body; access to clean water; and more. As you notice everything in your life that allows you to have a solid foundation, say a little thank you for each thing. These can often be the things we take for granted, so acknowledging all the positive aspects of your life with sincere appreciation can be a powerful reminder of your abundance.

And don’t forget to express gratitude for your own inner qualities and talents. For instance, you might express gratitude for your ability to stay grounded and calm in all situations. You can also express gratitude for your inner strength and resilience. All of these things contribute to a balanced, open, and healed root chakra.

    Journaling

Journaling is a profound practice to get in touch with your inner self, gently probe your thoughts and beliefs, explore your feelings, and connect with your body’s energy centers. For journaling specifically focused on root chakra healing, you can take a variety of approaches. You can center your practice on writing root chakra affirmations, do the gratitude practice in the section above in written form, or answer journal prompts that pertain to the root chakra. For root chakra journal prompts, check out my post, 30 Journal Prompts to Open and Heal the Root Chakra.

When you sit down to journal, first set the intention to connect with your root chakra. Seal this intention with a few deep, grounding breaths. Choose to write with honesty and authenticity, and release any judgment or self-criticism that may come up. It’s important that you make this time a judgment-free zone. The path to healing is paved in radical honesty and acceptance.

    Visualization

Visualization exercises can be beneficial for root chakra healing in a number of ways. One way to visualize is to follow the practice outlined in the Meditation section: connect with your root chakra by visualizing a bright red glowing orb at the base of your spine. As you breathe in, see the orb getting bigger. As you breathe out, see it growing brighter.

You can also practice visualization by envisioning your highest self with an open and balanced root chakra. What does a day in your life look like when your root chakra is completely balanced? How do you feel? How do you carry yourself? Visualize some unexpected obstacles appearing during your day, and see yourself reacting to these obstacles with a sense of calm, stability, and steadiness. After your visualization, see if you can align with that balanced and centered version of yourself as you continue through your day.

    Yoga

Almost any well-rounded yoga practice will support total body chakra healing, as yoga supports the free flow of energy (prana) throughout your body and can clear any blockages that may exist in your energy channels (nadis). Approach your yoga practice with an open and authentic heart.

For root chakra healing poses (asanas), check out the list below. During your practice, focus on connecting with your root chakra. Breathe into that spot at the base of your spine, and when your feet are on the floor, focus on setting up a strong and stable foundation for your body (as well as connecting to the earth).

    • Mountain Pose
    • Downward Dog
    • Tree Pose
    • Lunge Pose
    • Warrior II

    Aromatherapy

Sense of smell can be one of the most underutilized senses for restoring balance to your internal energy, as scent has the ability to both soothe and revitalize. For root chakra healing, use earth-scented essential oils, such as Cedarwood, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Basil, Patchouli, Black Pepper, Geranium. For more information on how to use essential oils to heal the chakras, check out my post, A Guide to Essential Oils for Chakra Healing.

    Color Therapy

Color therapy is the act of immersing yourself in the color associated with that chakra. For root chakra healing, this means immersing yourself in all things red. For instance, you can eat red food, wear red clothes, light red candles, write with red pen, and surround your space with red items. I often hear the question, “Does color therapy really work?” I wholeheartedly believe your success with color therapy is entirely tied to your intentions and belief. When you approach this practice, first set the intention to connect with your root chakra. You might decide that every time you see a certain red item, you’ll recite a grounding root chakra affirmation. You might also spend some time visualizing a bright red orb at the base of your spine. At the heart of it, don’t simply surround yourself with the color red just for the sake of it; do so with intention. Decide that you are going to cultivate a sense of groundedness, stability, and strength throughout your day.

I also like to combine color therapy with other root chakra healing practices, such as aromatherapy and journaling.

    Food

While we often think of food as affecting our physical selves, it also profoundly affects our mental, emotional, and spiritual selves as well. Just as eating too much junk food can be linked to anxiety, stress, and negative overall well-being, eating the right types of food can help you to feel calm, stable, and secure.

For root chakra healing foods, focus on root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots. You might also choose red fruits such as apples, cherries, and strawberries. Finally, as your root chakra is associated with strength, make sure you get in enough protein, which you can find in beans and nut butters.

    Crystals & Gemstones

Each chakra has powerful crystals associated with it, and these crystals can be used in various ways to balance and heal the energy within. For root chakra healing, use grounding crystals such as Hematite, Obsidian, Onyx, and Red Jasper. (You can find a list of grounding crystals and stones here.)

So how exactly do you use crystals for root chakra healing? After cleansing and programming your crystals, you can meditate with them, wear crystals as jewelry, keep them in your pocket throughout the day, create crystal grids, or keep them in a prominent spot nearby where you can easily see them. Whenever you see or hold your chosen crystal, set the intention to ground yourself to the present moment and feel a sense of security and stability, no matter what’s happening in your external world. You might also choose to recite a root chakra affirmation, such as “I am grounded,” or “All my needs are always met.”

Here’s a few more posts to help you get started with using crystals and gemstones to heal the chakras:

    Connect to Your Highest Self

What does this mean? Who is your highest self?

Your highest self is your truest, most authentic self. This part of you is untouched by external circumstances, appearances, and experiences. It is eternal and unchanging. This essence exists beyond your body and physical appearances.

If you stripped everything else away, this part of you would remain: the real and true you.

Your highest self is also the person you are when all of your chakras are open and balanced and energy is flowing freely throughout your body. And this all starts with your foundation: your root chakra.

One of the most powerful chakra healing practices you can do is to spend a day walking in the shoes of your highest, most authentic self. For root chakra healing, set the intention to walk through a day as your highest self with an open, healed, and balanced root chakra. Start the day feeling grounded, secure, stable, strong, and supported. Keep this version of you in mind as you interact with others and also in the way you talk to yourself. Anytime you find yourself straying from your highest self, simply choose to realign.

It may help to first journal about your highest self so you have a clear picture of who that person is before you start your day. No matter what, remember to refrain from self-criticism and judgment, and have compassion and love for all parts of you. Let this experience serve your highest good and support your growth.

    Your Energy Centers

It’s likely if you have a spiritual practice, meditate, and/or practice yoga, you’ve heard of chakras, your body’s energy centers through which your life force (or prana) flows. Chakra is a Sanskrit word for “wheel” or “disk” and is commonly defined as a wheel of energy in your body.

Your body has seven main chakras: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. Each chakra has associated attributes and plays a distinct role in your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health and well-being. For instance, your root chakra (also known as your first chakra) is your body’s energy center for stability, security, groundedness, safety, and strength. As the lowest energy center in your body, it acts as your foundation. When your root chakra is open and balanced, you feel stable and secure. Without a balanced root chakra and stable foundation, it’s likely that your other energy centers will also become imbalanced.

I won’t go into too much detail about chakras today, but if you’re interested in learning more, I’ve included links to some of my chakra blog posts below. I also encourage you to check out my Chakra Healing Bundle, which includes a Chakra Healing eBook, Chakra Healing Workbook, and 8-Week Chakra Healing Guide.

What I do want you to know about chakras today is this: even though each of your chakras plays a distinct role in your overall well-being, all of your chakras work together as one whole system. When one becomes imbalanced, it’s likely to affect the others. You can compare this to the physical organs inside your body: when one organ isn’t functioning correctly, this may negatively affect other parts of your body. All of your chakras play a significant role in keeping you in optimum health.

While you often only hear about the seven main chakras, your body actually has 114 chakras, and some people believe there are even more. For instance, you have chakras in your hands, shoulders, and tongue, and there are even two chakras that reside outside your body.

Finally, the last thing I want to note about chakras is that unlike your organs, your chakras aren’t an actual physical thing you can see in an x-ray. Rather, you experience them through feelings, sensations, and your own inner knowing.

    what are nadis

    What Are Nadis?

So what are nadis, and how do they play a role in your chakra system?

Nadis are the energy channels through which your life force flows; the word nadi is a Sanskrit word meaning “tube”, “channel”, or “flow.” (I’ve also seen it translated to “a flowing river.”) The points at which these nadis intersect are your chakras. You can think of it like a town with numerous roads and a building at each intersection. Your nadis are the roads, and your chakras are the buildings at each intersection. Cars, or your energy, are traveling up and down these roads to the buildings.

When the system is working perfectly, these buildings are open 24/7, and the cars are continually moving in and out of them.

This is the same as your energy centers: ideally, your chakras are always open so that energy can flow to and through them.

While the buildings and chakras get all the attention, they only work when the system as a whole works: roads need to be made for cars to travel on, and nadis are needed for energy to travel through.

Now, I do want to note that my road analogy isn’t a perfect comparison. Nadis are energy channels through which your life force flows, but they’are also intrinsically more than just a road to get to a chakra. If you’ve ever had an out-of-body experience, experienced an altered state of consciousness (often through meditation), or had a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel experience, it may be attributed to energy escaping through the body through your nadis. Nadis are also correlated to spiritual development and what you might consider “spiritual powers” (such as sensing or seeing auras).

Many estimate that you have between 21,000 to 72,000 nadis in your body, though some people believe there could be hundreds of thousands or even millions of nadis within each of us.

Just like you have over a hundred chakras but seven have been singled out as your main chakras, you have thousands of nadis, but three are believed to be most important: the Sushumna Nadi, the Ida Nadi, and the Pingala Nadi.

    Sushumna Nadi

The Sushumna Nadi is believed to be the most important of all the thousands of nadis that exist within your body. Running up the base of your spine to the crown of your head, this energy channel runs through all of your main chakras and is believed to be connected to your highest self. When it’s unblocked and energy can flow freely through it, you are aligned with your true, highest, most authentic self. You also become open to experiencing a profound spiritual awakening, feel a sense of deep inner wisdom, and know deep inner peace and true harmony within your mind, body, and spirit.

    Ida Nadi

Your Ida Nadi is associated with your feminine energy and starts at the base of your spine (at your root chakra). It then runs through your core to your left nostril. It is associated with right-brain dominance and what you might describe as softer, darker energy. It is also associated with the moon.

    Pingala Nadi

Your Pingala Nadi is associated with your masculine energy. It starts at the base of your spine (at your root chakra) and runs through your core to your right nostril. (The Ida Nadi and the Pingala Nadi flow upwards criss-crossing each other at your chakra points.) It’s associated with left-brain dominance and what you might describe as stronger, lighter energy. As the Ida Nadi is associated with the moon, the Pingala Nadi is associated with the sun.

    Unblocking Your Nadis

A lot of attention is paid to opening, healing, and unblocking your chakras, but it’s just as important that your nadis remain open and unblocked. Again, to return to the road analogy, in order for cars to get to the intersections where the buildings are located, they need to be able to travel freely up and down the roads. If a road is blocked, this not only inhibits the cars to travel through that road, but it affects neighboring roads as well.

If any of your energy channels become blocked, energy can no longer pass freely through it, inhibiting your energy from reaching your chakras. This can have negative effects on your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self.

So how do you ensure your nadis remain clear for energy to easily pass through? Here are a few methods:

    Alternate Nostril Breathing

Have you ever noticed that you may breathe easier through one nostril than the other? If not, you can try a quick test right now. Gently press any of the fingers on your right hand against the right side of your nose, closing the right nostril. Place the fingers of your left hand below your left nostril. Exhale through your nose, noticing whether you can feel the warm air of your exhale against your left fingers. Then try this with your right nostril.

If you’re able to feel air moving easily through both nostrils, that’s a good sign! If not, one of your nadis may be experiencing blockages. Alternate nostril breathing, also known as Nadi Shodhana, is one method to clear your energy channels so energy can flow freely through them. There are several ways to do this, so I’ll explain the method I use below, then link to some articles that discuss a few other methods.

    1. You can start in your preferred meditation position, sitting cross-legged on the floor or on a chair with your feet planted on the ground. (Just not laying down.) Keep your spine straight and your head lifted.
    2. Lift your right hand. With this practice, you’re going to use three fingers: pinky, ring, and thumb. You can take your index and middle finger and fold them against your palm, so only the pinky, ring finger, and thumb are sticking up.
    3. You may want to take a few deep breaths first and spend a minute or two grounding yourself to this present moment. Take as much time as you need.
    4. With the right thumb of the right hand, close your right nostril. Inhale deeply through your left nostril.
    5. At the top of your inhale, pause. Lift your thumb from your right nostril and close your left nostril using your pinky and ring finger. Exhale fully through your right nostril.
    6. Then inhale through your right nostril, exhale through your left nostril.
    7. Inhale through your left nostril, exhale through your right nostril.
    8. Continue this pattern for several minutes, pausing at the top of each inhale and exhale. You can continue this practice for as long as you’d like.

Since the Ida Nadi and Pingala Nadi both start at the base of your spine, criss-crossing each other and running through your left and right nostrils, respectively, it’s important to really follow your breath as you practice alternate nostril breathing. When your right nostril is closed, follow your breath from the base of your spine to your left nostril; when your left nostril is closed, follow your breath from the base of your spine to your right nostril.

Here are a few articles that discuss alternate nostril breathing and various methods for completing this practice:

    Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is the type of yoga the general public likely thinks of when they hear the word “yoga”: yoga that pairs poses, or asanas, with breathing techniques, or pranayama. When you’re looking at a course catalog for your local yoga studio, you can typically be certain that anything titled Hatha Yoga will move a little slower and may include breathing exercises, static postures, and possibly even a meditation to start or end the class.

Ha is translated to mean sun, and tha is translated to mean moon. If you remember from the bulletpoints on the Ida Nadi and Pingala Nadi above, the Ida Nadi is associated with the moon, and the Pingala Nadi is associated with the sun. The practice of Hatha yoga aims to balance these two energies – moon and sun, feminine and masculine – to bring the Ida Nadi and Pingala Nadi into equilibrium. (Note: The literal meaning of the word “hatha” means “force,” “effort,” or “exertion.”)

    Positive Affirmations and Intentions

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Where your attention goes, energy flows”? Your mindset plays a powerful role in the harmony of your mind, body, and spirit. For instance, if you easily become overwhelmed and have thoughts that correlate with stress and anxiety, this negative energy will manifest in physical, emotional, and spiritual turmoil. When you’re able to cultivate a mindset of inner peace and tranquility, your energy is able to flow more freely throughout your body. Note that this isn’t a call to engage in toxic positivity, which is just as dangerous as stress and anxiety. You should always honor all of your feelings, even those you deem as negative. But you don’t have to stay with those negative thoughts. As Paulo Coelho wrote, “You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it.” Use positive affirmations that truly resonate with you, and set the intention each day to remain grounded, stable, and peaceful, no matter what occurs in your external world.

    Gentle Movement

If the weather allows it, go on a calming walk outside somewhere you feel safe and breathe in the fresh air. Engage in gentle movement that feels good to you and doesn’t put too much stress on your body. If you’re able to jog without breathing too heavily, you can do this as well. But don’t feel limited to these options. For instance, I’ve exercised using a weighted hula hoop and found this to be extremely effective in stimulating the movement of energy throughout my body. (Plus, it’s fun!) Gentle movement stimulates the flow of energy within the body in a way that can be both nurturing and calming.

    Final Thoughts

While chakras rightfully get a lot of attention when it comes to the total well-being of your mind, body, and spirit, it’s important not to forget the role your nadis play in your overall health. Your nadis also play an essential role in connecting to your highest self and experiencing spiritual growth. When these energy channels are open and clear, you are able to find alignment with your true self and maintain optimum health: spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

    What is a Chakra?

When you’re first learning about chakras, it can be a little confusing to understand what exactly they are, especially without proper guidance or explanations. Some guided meditations may jump in to describing these glowing orbs of colored light within you, which can often be more than a little disconcerting at first.

So let’s simplify and break down what exactly a chakra is and why it’s important.

But what happens when a chakra becomes blocked? When one of your chakras becomes blocked, which can happen for many reasons, your life force energy stagnates. This results in mental, physical, emotional, and/or spiritual blockages. For instance, grief and betrayal are both two experiences that may result in blockages in the heart chakra. As a result, you may experience feelings of loneliness, depression, distrust, and anger.

In this post, we’re going to focus on the seven main chakras, but there are actually 114 chakras throughout your body, and some people believe there to be more. It’s important to keep in mind while each chakra has its own role and individual attributes, they act as one whole system. When one chakra is blocked or overactive, this affects the energy throughout your entire chakra system.

    History of Chakra Colors

You may be familiar with the idea that chakras each have a corresponding color connected to it. Here’s the list:

    • Root Chakra: Red
    • Sacral Chakra: Orange
    • Solar Plexus Chakra: Yellow
    • Heart Chakra: Green
    • Throat Chakra: Light Blue
    • Third Eye Chakra: Indigo (Also associated with blue and purple.)
    • Crown Chakra: Purple (Also associated with white and gold.)

While these are the commonly accepted colors for the chakras, this is actually a fairly recent development in the history of chakras. In fact, most ancient traditions never associated chakras with specific colors. Instead, they were more likely to associate a chakra with a specific mantra or shape.

So where did the idea of the chakra colors come from? In 1970, author Christopher Hills first wrote about the chakra colors in his book, Nuclear Evolution: Discovery of the Rainbow Body. Since this original publishing, the chakra colors I listed above have become widely accepted throughout the western world.

So what does this mean? Are the chakra colors a lie?

Here’s my answer: No, but it’s up to you to determine whether the chakra colors resonate with you.

I know people who personally resonate with the chakra colors and who have used color therapy as a form of healing their chakras. Color therapy is the practice of surrounding yourself with the color of the chakra you want to open, activate, and/or heal. For instance, if you want to connect with your heart chakra, you might wear a green shirt, write in green pen, eat green vegetables, drink a green smoothie, and place green items around your work station.

Additionally, many energy healers sense and can often see certain colors within and surrounding other people; these colors often associate with the designated chakra colors.

But if you personally don’t resonate with the chakra colors? That’s okay. Maybe you’ve tried some chakra meditations that have you connecting with each chakra by perceiving it as a brightly colored orb in its designated color, but you don’t feel like this does anything for you. Like I said, that’s completely okay. You might choose instead to view it as a swirling vortex, a colorless ball of energy, or a bright white or golden light.

You can also choose to focus less on the color and more on a different aspect of the chakra, such as its associated mantra. I’ve listed the mantras for each chakra in the next section.

Whether or not you associate with the chakra colors, know that there’s no right or wrong path as long as you’re willing to do the deep inner work to connect with and heal your chakras.

    Aromatherapy

When it comes to chakra healing, aromatherapy can be one of most underutilized and often underestimated practices for balancing and healing your energy within. Essential oils can be a powerful resource for revitalizing energy, soothing the spirit, and bringing harmony and tranquility to your body’s energy centers.

So what exactly is aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural plant extracts for therapeutic healing. It’s known as a holistic healing treatment that promotes the total well-being of your mind, body, and spirit.

When we think of aromatherapy, we often think of essential oils, especially as they’ve become more and more popular over the past decade. Essential oils are natural products extracted from the flower, bark, leaves, or fruit of a plant.

Aromatherapy is a profound practice for healing your energy within, but like all healing practices, intention is key. Whenever you begin a healing practice, do so with intention. For me, this means before I use my essential oils (or before I do another chakra-healing practice), I’ll take a deep breath and state my intention either internally or aloud.

Here are a couple examples of intentions:

    • I am opening and healing my heart chakra.
    • I am activating my third eye chakra.
    • I am promoting the free flow of energy within my body.
    • I am showing love and compassion to my mind, body, and spirit.

Know that there are no wrong intentions as long as it feels true to you. Keep your chosen intention in mind as you begin your practice, and hold onto it as you continue through your day.

If you want to learn more about opening, activating, and healing your body’s energy centers, be sure to check out my Ultimate Chakra Healing Bundle. The bundle comes with a Chakra Healing eBook, Chakra Healing Workbook, and 8-Week Chakra Healing Guide. (All items can be purchased individually as well!)

Below, I list essential oils for each of the chakras and provide you with links to essential oils you can purchase today (as well as some beautiful accessories and diffusers). First, here are some suggested practices for how you can use essential oils to balance and heal your chakras.

When using essential oils, please read labels and packaging instructions. Dilute as instructed. Practice safe storage. And choose brands that are free of synthetic chemicals. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to your healthcare professional.

How to Use Essential Oils for Chakras

    In a Diffuser

Choose a location for your diffuser where it’ll be nearby throughout the day (or during your healing practice). Use an essential oil or a blend of oils associated with the chakra you want to heal. What I love most about using a diffuser for chakra healing is that I can combine this with other chakra healing practices. For instance, I can journal, meditate, do a creative activity, or work with crystals while my diffuser is going.

Using an essential oil diffuser can be an especially powerful practice for the sacral chakra, which is associated with the element water, and the heart chakra, which is associated with the element air. However, all chakras can benefit from this practice, and using an essential oil diffuser can be a powerful way to bring peace and serenity to your energy within.

    Personal Fragrance

If you’re out and about during the day, you may choose to use your essential oil as a personal fragrance in order to experience the healing aroma throughout the day. First, choose an essential oil associated with the chakra you want to work with. Make sure that the essential oil you choose is safe to apply to the skin. (Some essential oils, such as “hot” oils, should not be applied to skin. Different people may have different reactions to essential oils depending on skin sensitivity and allergies. Always follow usage directions, and consult your healthcare professional if you have any questions.)

Once you’ve chosen an oil, you can apply it to your forehead, temples, neck, or chest. One option I love for this is using essential oil roll-on bottles, especially since most come pre-diluted (often with coconut oil) for safety. I’ve linked to some of my favorites at the bottom of this post!

Add a Drop to Chakra’s Associated Physical Location

If you want to heal your throat chakra, you might apply an essential oil to the throat and chest area. To open your third eye chakra, you can apply to your temple and forehead. And as your root chakra represents your foundation and connection to the earth, you could apply an essential oil for the root chakra to the soles of your feet. Just note that the same safety guidelines I wrote above apply here as well!

Add a Drop to Your Water

I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but again, please follow all usage and safety instructions, and check to make sure your chosen essential oil is safe for internal use. When following proper safety precautions, ingesting a drop of your chosen essential oil (diluted in water or tea) can be a powerful way to transport the healing energy of the oil throughout the body.

    Healing the Sacral Chakra

How often do you let yourself play?

No work. No thinking about your to-do lists. No sacrificing your time for everyone else.

    Just fun, non-productive, glorious play.

And even more: How often do you daydream? How do you express your creativity in your daily life? If you have a creative job, what fun and creative things do you do in your off-time that aren’t for work? How do you seek pleasure in your daily life?

It’s not normal for adults to prioritize fun, creativity, and play in their daily lives. At least, we don’t think of it as normal. But it should be!

Fun, creativity, and passion are all important components of the sacral chakra, your body’s second energy center. This is also your energy center for joy, prosperity, sensuality, sexuality, openness, and honesty.

When your sacral chakra is open and energy is freely flowing in and out of this energy center, you’re likely to be an inspired, passionate being who is effortlessly in touch with your creative and fun side. It also means you’re open and honest with others, and you also have a healthy relationship with your sensuality and sexuality.

However, if your sacral chakra is either underactive or overactive, then you likely are experiencing deficiencies in areas of fun, passion, and creativity. When underactive, you may become withdrawn, tense, and insecure. And when it’s overactive, you’re more prone to becoming controlling, manipulative, and aggressive.

Healing your sacral chakra is a necessary component to allowing unending joy and prosperity into your life.

And know this: you deserve joy. You deserve prosperity. And you deserve to live an effortlessly beautiful, free, creative life that you feel truly passionate about.

So ditch the “all work, no play” mentality and invite beautiful abundance into your life today.

How to Use These Journal Prompts

The 30 journal prompts below are designed to help you activate, open, and heal your sacral chakra. Each prompt focuses on important aspects of the sacral chakra, including creativity, fun, play, your relationship with your body, sensuality, passion, and sexuality.

Keeping in line with the fun of this energy center, there truly are no rules here! If you want to skip around and only answer the prompts that resonate with you, that’s totally fine. Or, if you’d like, you can start at the top and work your way to the bottom one prompt at a time. You don’t have to answer all the prompts, though I think it can be powerful to do so as unexpected feelings and beliefs may arise from the questions posed in the various prompts.

There’s definitely no time limit, so take as much or as little time as you need to answer these questions below. I do suggest that on days when you choose to work through these prompts, you set aside some time for yourself where you won’t be distracted or interrupted.

And finally, make this sacred time in which you answer these prompts a judgment-free zone. In order to heal, we must work through the negative thoughts and beliefs we carry inside. And the only way we can truly embrace this healing journey is if we release judgment and embrace wholehearted authenticity, truth, and self-love.

And don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of this page, where you can download your free printable sacral chakra affirmations and journal prompts! Use these free resources to serve and support you in your healing journey.

    What is the Throat Chakra?

Located in the center of your neck, the throat chakra is your body’s energy center for communication, authenticity, honesty, and integrity.

When your throat chakra is open and balanced, you’re able to communicate clearly and effectively. You feel empowered to speak openly and freely, and you deeply understand that your voice and your words are important and powerful. Additionally, you know the importance of give and take in communication, and you’re able to respectfully listen when others are speaking.

In addition to being the energy center for communication, your throat chakra is the energy center for truth, integrity, and authenticity. This means you do more than just speak; you speak your authentic truth while remaining true to yourself and your guiding principles. Your daily actions also support this, and as you move through your day, you remain aligned with your values and principles.

In contrast, when your throat chakra is underactive, you may be excessively shy, withdrawn, and/or experience difficulty expressing yourself. With an overactive throat chakra, you may be loud, gossipy, and someone who interrupts others and talks out of turn.

Your words, ideas, and wholehearted presence matter, and you deserve to know this wholly and unconditionally. That’s why opening and healing your throat chakra is an essential step in your self-love journey.

Below are 35 powerful throat chakra affirmations to help you open, balance, and heal this important energy center.

    Sahasrara: The Crown Chakra

Have you ever felt like something was just missing from your life?

Sometimes, that thing can be hard to pinpoint, especially when, from the outside, it looks like you have everything.

    I know this feeling intimately.

For years, I lived my life the way I believed I was “supposed” to live it. After graduating college, I found a comfortable office job and continued on the path of stability and security for many years.

And don’t get me wrong: stability and security are really, really important things, and I was grateful every day to have these privileges.

But something just felt empty inside me.

It took many years to learn that what was missing from my life was a spiritual connection to a higher power.

I had big dreams but believed that I was on my own to make them come true. I didn’t believe there was any higher presence trying to guide and help me. I wanted to believe this, but there was always a disconnection. I couldn’t let go of control and learn how to trust.

Cultivating this connection with a higher power – you might call this power God, Source Energy, the Universe, the Divine, All That Is, or any name that feels right to you – has been one of the greatest positive shifts in my life. And it’s not over: it’s something I’m still learning, discovering, and growing into every single day. In fact, I don’t think this process of growing and becoming every really ends.

There is a beautiful, peaceful, loving path to cultivating true connection: connection to yourself, connection to a higher power, and connection to your soul’s purpose.

The Sahasrara chakra is the gateway that gently guides you to taking that first step.

Why Balancing the Crown Chakra is Important

Have you ever heard stories about high-ranking CEOs and corporate bigwigs suddenly leaving their high-paying jobs, selling everything, and moving across the country to pursue their soul’s purpose? I remember reading once about a guy who was making millions in his high-ranking job, who gave up everything to follow his calling: growing coffee beans on an island somewhere, where he lived a quiet and humble life with his family.

At least, that’s how the article told the story.

I don’t know him, but I believe if you asked him, he wouldn’t say he “gave up” anything; rather, he received more than he could ever dream of.

Often, in these stories, you hear the person say they followed their intuition. They might call it an inner knowing or a calling. Often, we fight this feeling because it seemingly doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t follow logic and reason as we know it in our human experience. It seems absurd.

But something kind of magical happens when you surrender control to something higher than yourself and step into your calling:

Everything starts to unfold perfectly for you, better than you ever could’ve imagined.

This is what the crown chakra does for you.

The crown chakra is your energy center for spiritual connection, enlightenment, inner wisdom, and connecting with your highest self. When your crown chakra is open and flowing freely, you gain a sense of clarity and vision. You become more trusting, learn the beauty in surrender, and feel a sense of deep inner peace.

And if that still sounds kind of scary to you, know this: surrendering to a higher power doesn’t mean giving up your sense of personal power or identity.

    Rather, it’s the opposite.

It allows you to step into your power and become more than you ever dreamed possible.

And it also helps you to accept and see the beauty in this human experience, even on the days when nothing seems to go as planned.

Below, I discuss the attributes of the Sahasrara chakra, or the crown chakra, and provide you with ways to heal and restore harmony to this energy center of spirituality. I also provide you with some gentle affirmations and powerful journal prompts to help guide you in your journey.

As you step forward onto the path of connection with your Sahasrara chakra, set the intention to connect with your inner self, and allow this intention to guide you forward through each step of your journey.

Signs of a Balanced Crown Chakra

    Sahasrara

When your crown chakra is balanced, you feel a deep connection with a higher power and a sense of spiritual enlightenment. Rather than try to control every step of your journey, you know when to step back, surrender, and trust. When it comes to your future, you feel a sense of clarity, vision, and purpose. You take inspired action and trust your inner knowing to guide you down the right path.

Often, a balanced crown chakra means your lower energy centers are likely in harmony as well, as we’re best able to connect with our spiritual selves when our other needs are met. (Note that there may be exceptions.)

And when your energy centers are balanced, it’s likely that you’re truly living as your highest and most authentic self.

Here are some signs of a balanced crown chakra:

    • Spiritual
    • Enlightened
    • Sense of clarity
    • Focused
    • Creative
    • Trusting
    • Peaceful
    • Connected to a higher power
    • Connected to oneself
    • Feeling of divine peace
    • Sense of inner wisdom
    • Able to surrender to a power higher than oneself
    • Trust in inner knowing
    • Connected to your soul’s purpose

Signs of an Imbalanced Crown Chakra

When you experience imbalances in any of your energy centers, this imbalance could go one of two ways; it can become overactive or underactive.

With an overactive crown chakra, you might start to lose touch with yourself because you wrap your entire identity in spirituality. This may also cause you to become judgmental of others’ spirituality because you feel like you know the “right” answers.

When your crown chakra is underactive, you may lack a spiritual presence in your life. You feel a deep sense of isolation and disconnection, not just from a higher power but from yourself. You may also be more skeptical and close-minded toward the idea that a higher power even exists.

Below is a list of signs that your crown chakra may be imbalanced:

    • Cynical
    • Close-minded
    • Disconnected from yourself
    • Disconnected from a higher power
    • Lack of faith
    • Lack of purpose
    • Frustrated with life
    • Scattered
    • Forgetful
    • Confused
    • Excessive isolation
    • Lonely
    • Unable to connect with others
    • Critical of other’s spiritual beliefs

Physical Signs of an Imbalanced Crown Chakra

In addition to spiritual and emotional symptoms, you may experience physical symptoms when the energy flowing through your chakras is out of balance.

When the crown chakra is imbalanced, corresponding physical manifestations often arise in and around the area of the head.

Here are some of the signs and symptoms you may experience with an imbalanced crown chakra:

    • Migraines and/or recurring headaches
    • Nerve pain
    • Insomnia
    • Nightmares
    • Neurological disorders
    • Schizophrenia

    Crown Chakra Affirmations

    Crown Chakra Affirmations

When using affirmations for your crown chakra, allow yourself to go within and focus on your inner world as well as to your divine connection to the Universe. Take a deep breath and let a flood of deep inner peace wash over you. Don’t try too hard; just simply allow yourself to be.

    Crown Chakra Journal Prompts

    Crown Chakra Journal Prompts

Journaling is a powerful way to balance, heal, activate, and simply seek to understand all of your energy centers. I find it especially helpful when it comes to the crown chakra, though, because it really allows you to connect with your inner self.

And it’s that inner work that’s truly going to allow you to connect to your spirit as well as to give you a sense of clarity and vision.

There’s no “right” way to journal, nor is there a right time. I like to journal in the morning, while many others like to journal at night. Simply find what works best for you. The most important thing is that you have some time to truly focus without distractions. This is especially important when it comes to the crown chakra, as you really want to be able to focus on connecting with the inner you.

Below are some detailed prompts you can use to heal and better understand your crown chakra:

    • What does it mean to me to surrender? How do I practice surrendering? When are some times when I can surrender more? Are there any experiences in which I shouldn’t surrender? How do I surrender without losing my personal power?
    • What (or who) is God to me? What is my relationship with a higher power? Do I feel like this higher power is something I find within me, outside of me, or both? Did I have any childhood experiences that negatively affected my belief, attitude, or relationship toward God (or The Universe, Source Energy, the Divine, or any other name that feels comfortable)? Describe in depth what God means to you.
    • Visualize a day in which you are your highest and most authentic self with a balanced crown chakra. How do you feel when you wake up? How do you move about your day? How do you speak to yourself and others? What self-care activities do you prioritize? Write about this day in the present tense, and as you write, allow yourself to feel the positive emotions you imagine yourself feeling in this envisioned life.
    • Describe your connections to other living beings: people, animals, plants, the earth, and the universe as a whole. Have you ever experienced a sense of oneness with some or all? What does it mean to you to be connected to all? Is it possible to have an individual identity while feeling connected to all?

Activating and Healing the Crown Chakra

    Color Therapy

Color therapy is essentially the act of surrounding yourself with the color of the chakra you’re intending to heal or activate. For the crown chakra, that means immersing yourself in all things violet (with a touch of white, if you’d like.) Eat purple foods like purple grapes, purple carrots, prunes, purple potatoes, and plums. Write spiritual affirmations on purple post-it notes and place them around your home and workspace. Wear violet clothing and jewelry. Paint with purple and white. Place violet items around your space and let them bring you serenity.

    Detox/Fast

Your physical body needs food for nourishment, but your spiritual self doesn’t really need food in the same way. Unlike your other energy centers, which have associated foods that allow for healing, the crown chakra is best healed by detoxing or fasting.* This helps you to clear your mind while flushing out toxins that may be harming your body. When detoxing, focus on fresh fruits, veggies, and lots of water.

*If you choose to detox or fast, just make sure you’re following the proper guidance of a medical professional.

    Nature

Try to find an open field or special spot that gives you lots of space to think, turn inward, and simply be. If you feel safe and comfortable enough to meditate outdoors, this would be the perfect time to meditate. If the weather allows, journaling outdoors is also another powerful practice for healing.

    Yoga

Yoga is a beautiful restorative practice that allows you to balance and heal your body’s energy centers.

To activate or heal the energy in your crown chakra, you could actually perform poses that focus on healing the lower six chakras. It may seem weird, but the truth is, it’s more difficult to have a balanced crown chakra when your other energy centers are imbalanced. By focusing on the energy below, you’re better able to heal the energy above.

To heal or activate the crown chakra, you can also choose poses that allow you to look within. You might already have a few poses in mind that allow for this type of inner work.

Here’s a list of poses that may help in healing the crown chakra:

    • Lotus Pose
    • Corpse Pose
    • Tree Pose
    • Headstand
    • Fish Pose
    • Standing Prayer Backbend

And here’s a great 10-minute crown chakra yoga routine from Yoga with Christina if you’re unsure where to start.

    Meditation

Meditation is a powerful healing tool for any of your energy centers, but it’s especially profound when it comes to the crown chakra as the crown chakra’s associated element is thought/consciousness. Connecting with your inner self is key to opening up and healing this energy center.

When you meditate, you might imagine a beautiful white light entering through the crown of your head and filling your entire being. You could also envision a soothing, violet energy filling your aura.

Here are some free guided Sahasrara chakra meditations you can find on the Insight Timer app:

    Journaling

You can use the journal prompts above or write down some beautiful crown chakra affirmations as you journal. You might also choose to sit down without a prompt and simply connect to your inner self.

    Sahasrara Chakra Affirmations

You can repeat Sahasrara (crown chakra) affirmations as you wake up in the morning and as you’re getting ready for the day. You might also repeat them at night before you go to bed. I also like to find creative ways to incorporate affirmations throughout the day, like sticking post-it notes around my home and work space and setting up phone notifications to pop up with uplifting affirmations written on them.

    Sahasrara Chakra Gemstones

Keeping crystals associated with the crown chakra will promote spiritual connection and help you to feel peaceful, trusting, and aligned with your highest self. You can use crystals in numerous ways. For instance, you might wear them as jewelry, keep them around your work space, meditate with them, or set up a sacred space with crystals at the forefront.

Here are some of the crystals associated with the crown chakra:

    • Selenite
    • Clear Quartz
    • Amethyst
    • Diamond
    • Moonstone
    • Sapphire

    Sahasrara Chakra Essential Oils

Essential oils promote feelings of peace, harmony, and balance within. They’re a great method for balancing your energy centers because they can be used in conjunction with other items on this list. For instance, you can meditate or journal while essential oils are in your diffuser, and you can even add some crystals or color therapy as well.

Intentions are everything, though. So before you use your essential oils, set the intention to balance, heal, or activate your crown chakra. Even if you have a diffuser going in the background as you’re working, focus on the feelings of peace, inner harmony, and connection with both yourself and a higher power. Let these calm and soothing feelings guide you as you continue on your day.

Here’s a few essential oils associated with the Sahasrara chakra:

    • Frankincense
    • Sandalwood
    • Saffron
    • Jasmine
    • Cedarwood
    • Lavender
