    What Are Mala Beads?

    For centuries, many different religions have been using prayer beads as part of their spiritual practice. My grandpa was Catholic, and growing up, I remember seeing him pray with his rosary set between his fingers at least once a day. At his funeral, there were multiple stories told of my Grandpa Moose and his rosary, and there was also a service in which loved ones honored his memory by reciting the Holy Rosary as they held rosary beads.

    Mala beads have been used as part of a spiritual practice for over 3,000 years, most prominently associated with Hinduism and Buddhism. However, they have gained widespread acceptance among people of various spiritual backgrounds, and in many cultures, they’re used as part of a non-religious affiliated meditation practice.

    So what exactly are mala beads?

    Mala beads are a string of beads used as a meditation and mindfulness aid. Typically, they have 108 beads, and while each necklace or bracelet is unique, they generally all have the same standard components, such as the Guru Bead, the Tassel, Marker Beads, and Spacer Beads. We’ll define the function of these different components below.

    The most common use of mala beads is to recite a mantra during meditation. They’re also often used as a mindful breathing tool, and you can even use them as part of your manifestation practice. Many people who have a difficult time sitting still during meditation find that incorporating mala beads into their practice helps them to relax and cultivate a greater sense of mindfulness as they meditate.

    Below, you’ll learn about the various components of mala beads, how to use them, and how to choose the best mala beads for you.

    Common Components Of Mala Beads

    As mentioned above, the common components you’ll see in a mala bead necklace are the following:

    • 108 Counting Beads
    • Guru Bead
    • Marker Beads
    • Spacer or Decorative Beads
    • Knots
    • Charm
    • Tassel

    Here’s the function of each of these components:

    108 Counting Beads

    Each mala necklace typically has 108 identical counting or primary beads, though some have less, which is okay. In meditation, it’s typical to hold the mala beads with one hand, draped across your fingers, and touch each counting bead with the thumb and middle finger one at a time, working your way through the entire necklace. You’ll complete one full inhale and exhale with each bead before moving to the next. (More on this practice in the How-To section below.)

    Guru Bead

    The Guru Bead is your starting point. It is typically bigger and has a distinct look from the other beads on the mala necklace or bracelet, though sometimes it’ll be the same type of bead as the marker beads. You’ll usually find this bead attached to the tassel.

    Marker Beads

    You’ll typically find four marker beads on a mala necklace, spaced at every 27th bead. These marker beads are usually slightly bigger than the counting beads and often a different color. The marker beads are a way to help you come back to your meditation if your mind has strayed. When you come across a marker bead, it reminds you to return to the present moment. In essence, this is a beautiful mindfulness tool. (Note that not all malas have marker beads.)

    Spacer/Decorative Beads

    The spacer beads are typically smaller (and often flatter) beads placed between larger beads. Depending on the unique necklace, you may see these in different sections, such as between the Guru bead and counting beads or before and after every marker bead. Note that not all mala necklaces have spacer beads. You do not count the spacer beads during your meditation.

    Knots

    In a typical mala necklace, you’ll find a small knot between each bead. The knot ensures that if the string breaks, the beads will not be lost. This makes your mala stronger, and the knots can also help with the movement of the mala during your meditation.

    Charm

    Your mala may or may not have a charm on the end, often in place of the tassel. The charm is typically ornamental, though you may choose one that has special meaning to you, such as a lotus flower or chakra symbol.

    Tassel

    While the tassel may seem at first appearance to be decorative, it’s actually steeped in deep spiritual symbolism. The strings of the mala loop through all of the beads, coming together through the Guru bead and finishing in the tassel. Some view this coming together of the strings to be symbolic of oneness, both with the Universe and each other. It can also be viewed as one’s desire to reach enlightenment. While I didn’t list it here, you can also view the string or thread that the beads are threaded on to be an important component of the mala, as it’s the link that brings everything together.

    How To Choose Mala Beads

    There isn’t a science to choosing your mala, which is a good thing if you’re like me and tend to follow your intuition when making decisions.

    Choosing the right mala beads for you is truly an intuitive practice. As you start searching for the right one for you, you’ll find mala bead necklaces that come in all different colors and often are made of different materials. Some of these materials might include gemstones, pearls, wood, and lotus seeds.

    This is one of the most important questions to ask yourself as you’re searching for mala beads:

    “Do I find it beautiful?”

    It truly is that simple. Find the one that speaks to you. If you’re browsing through mala beads and one nudges your heart, it’s very likely you’ve found the perfect mala necklace for you.

    I know from personal experience, however, that it’s easy to get stuck in your own head when making these types of decisions. I have a history of over-analyzing my shopping choices, from what yearly planner I should purchase to what pint of ice cream I want to buy (and promptly consume). I love to follow my heart, but sometimes my heart wants mint chocolate chip and cookies n’ cream.

    If you’re having trouble choosing, I find it helpful to step back and ask myself, “What are my intentions?” Do I want to use these mala beads to help me cultivate spirituality? Do I want to feel a connection with a higher power? Do I want to improve my meditations? Is this a way for me to feel more calm and relaxation?

    Once you’ve established your intentions, you may have a clearer picture of which mala beads you want to purchase.

    Finally, if you’re in a physical store, it’s always helpful to pick up the mala beads and get a feel for them within your fingers. Since you’re going to be holding these beads for an extended amount of time, you want to make sure you choose ones that feel good to you.

    Benefits of Using Mala Beads

    So why use mala beads? We’ve touched upon this a little bit above, but let’s dive into all the reasons mala beads can be beneficial to you:

    • Promotes Mindfulness: As you take conscious inhales and exhales with each bead before moving onto the next, you’re more likely to remain in the present moment throughout your meditation. And if your thoughts do drift, you’ll eventually reach one of the marker beads, which will gently bring you back to the here and now.
    • Can Improve Your Meditation: This is especially true if you have a hard time sitting still for extended amounts of time. If you find yourself wanting to move around and fidget while meditating, mala beads are the perfect tool for you to incorporate into your practice. It’s, in a sense, mindful fidgeting. (Kind of?)
    • Helps Improve Your Breathwork: I tend to be pretty good at consciously paying attention to my inhales and exhales while meditating . . . at least during the first few minutes. I’ve found that mala beads empower me to be more conscious of my breathing throughout my meditation. And to circle back to the two bulletpoints above, this helps to promote mindfulness and improves my meditation.
    • Connection With a Higher Power: The mala is more than just its individual components; it’s an entire unit brought together by the thread that links together the counting beads with the marker beads with the Guru bead with the tassel. This unity represents our own unity: unity with our higher selves, unity with each other, and unity with a higher power.

    How To Use Mala Beads

    Meditation

    While using mala beads in meditation may seem overwhelming at first, it’s actually an extremely simple and effective way to meditate that requires little to no technical ability.

    Before using mala beads in meditation, I want you to give yourself permission to be imperfect, especially as you’re first learning. It’s okay if you don’t follow all of the steps perfectly when you’re just starting. The most important thing is intention. If your heart is in the right place, and your intentions are positive, this is far more important than perfection.

    Furthermore, you can use your imperfections as a way to practice mindfulness, non-judgmental awareness, and compassion. Were you holding your mala beads with the incorrect fingers? Was your mind so distracted, you missed the marker beads? Notice, accept, and keep going.

    Here’s your step-by-step directions for how to use mala beads in meditation. I’ll discuss some alternative uses below.

    Breathing Meditation
    1. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. If you already have an ongoing meditation practice, you may already have a time and space that works for you. If you use the full 108 beads, this practice typically takes 30 minutes. If you decide not to use the full 108 beads, that’s okay. You can choose to stop at one of the marker beads instead.
    2. Drape your mala beads over your non-dominant hand. Make sure you feel comfortable and that the beads will be easy to move. With your thumb and middle finger of your dominant hand, gently touch the Guru bead. You typically do not use the index finger in this practice, as the index finger is connected to the Ego.
    3. Touch the first counting bead, and take one full inhale and exhale. Then, move to the second bead. Continue this process, inhaling and exhaling once per bead. You’ll stop when you make your way around back to the Guru bead.
    4. As mentioned above, you can choose to shorten your meditation by stopping at one of the marker beads. Alternatively, if you wish to extend your meditation, you can turn the mala around and start again. Note that it’s common practice not to jump over the Guru bead. So if you’re extending your meditation, rather than jumping over it to start back at the first counting bead, you’d turn the mala around and go in reverse.
    Mantra Meditation

    I was first introduced to using mala beads in meditation through the practice of mantra meditations. A mantra meditation is one in which you repeat a specific mantra throughout the meditation (traditionally, 108 times). This form of meditation is also known as japa meditation.

    Your chosen mantra should be something that resonates with you. It can be a sacred word, affirmation, divine name, or simply a word such as love or peace.

    Here are a few examples of possible mantras you could use:

    • Aum or Om (This has many rich and deep meanings. It is known as the word of God, the sacred sound of the Universe, and the union of the mind, body, and spirit.)
    • Om Shanti Om (Universal Peace)
    • Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (Peace of Mind, Body, and Speech)
    • Love
    • Peace
    • I am love.
    • I am peace.
    • I am worthy.
    • I am enough.
    • Love guides me.

    To perform a mantra meditation using mala beads, you’ll essentially take the same steps you do with the breathing meditation. However, in place of the conscious inhales and exhales, you’ll repeat your chosen mantra as you touch each bead. You can repeat your mantra either internally, at a whisper under your breath, or out loud. Do what makes you feel most comfortable.

    Alternative Uses

    While meditation is the most common way to use mala beads, it’s not the only way. Here are a few other practices for using mala beads:

    • Wear Your Beads: Wearing your mala beads is more than just a fashion statement; it’s a profound practice to connect you to your highest self and cultivate mindfulness in your life. When you wear your beads, you can set the intention to remember the same peace and serenity you feel when you’re meditating. The most common ways to wear your beads are as a necklace or wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet.
    • Manifestation: The most powerful way to use mala beads for manifestation is to recite affirmations for manifestation as you touch each bead. To do this, you’d follow the same steps I wrote above for the breathing meditation, but in place of the conscious inhales and exhales, you’d recite a positive affirmation. As you do this, consciously make sure to feel the positive energy of the affirmation flowing through you. It’s up to you whether you’d like to recite different affirmations or repeat the same affirmations throughout. For some ideas of affirmations to use, here are some Law of Attraction affirmations and manifestation affirmations to get you started.
    • Gratitude Practice: This has become one of my personal favorite ways to use mala beads. Again, you’ll follow the same instructions as above for the breathing meditation, but here, you’ll think of one thing you’re grateful for as you touch each bead. I know it may seem like 108 things is a lot, but it actually becomes pretty easy once you get going. For instance, you can think about each individual part of your body, from your eyes to your lips to your lungs, arms, stomach, legs, and feet (and everything in-between). You can also think about individual people, memories, and luxuries we often take for granted, like air conditioning and running water.

    Getting Started With Manifestation Books

    When I first started learning about manifestation and the Law of Attraction, I remember devouring every single bit of information I could get my hands on.

    I saved manifestation podcasts and listened to them on my morning runs, reveling in every new secret I learned.

    I combed the far corners of Google, feasting my eyes upon every new piece of information I could find on how to manifest anything I wanted.

    And I ordered book after book on the Law of Attraction, ending up with a pile next to my desk that grew quicker than I could even read them.

    So you could say, I got a little excited.

    But you know what? I’m grateful for that excitement. I’m grateful for the hours spent each day learning about manifestation and putting all of these newfound lessons and techniques into practice.

    You know why?

    Because it absolutely, unequivocally changed my life for the better.

    For one, I wouldn’t be writing this to you right now if I hadn’t gone all in on manifestation. If I hadn’t taken those initial steps, I don’t think I ever would’ve gained the confidence and self-belief to decide I was worthy of my dreams.

    Best Manifestation Books

    Super Attractor

    Gabrielle Bernstein is a household name in the manifestation space, and for good reason. She’s the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Universe Has Your Back and has written multiple bestselling books. What makes Super Attractor so special is that it’s essentially a complete how-to book on manifestation, outlining all of the essential methods for manifesting a life even greater than you can imagine.

    What I love about Bernstein’s writing is that she writes like your loving, supportive friend, and above all, she encourages fun, relaxation, joy, and feeling good. This is the book that removes difficulty and struggle from manifestation and shows you how fun it can be to create the life of your dreams.

    Manifest Your Destiny

    I’d wholeheartedly recommend any of Wayne Dyer’s books to support you in your spiritual and personal growth journey, but if I had to choose one specifically for manifestation, it’d have to be Manifest Your Destiny: The Nine Spiritual Principles for Getting Everything You Want.

    I don’t know if anything I write here can really do this book justice. Manifest Your Destiny teaches manifestation through the art of meditation and explores the nine spiritual principles for overcoming the “I can’t do that,” mentality so you can begin creating the life of your dreams. This is an extraordinary book that will help you to become your highest and most authentic self as you learn how to manifest a life beyond your wildest dreams.

    Ask and It Is Given

    First, I encourage you to go into this powerful book with an open mind and an open heart. If you don’t know anything about Esther Hicks and Abraham Hicks, I’d also encourage you to do a little research before reading this book. I know some people become preoccupied with the question of whether or not it’s all “real.” My take? It doesn’t really matter. Why? Because every single word in this book, whether it comes from Esther or Abraham or something else entirely, is meant to serve and support your ultimate well-being.

    Ask and It Is Given is all about showing you how you have the power to create the beautiful life of your dreams, and it gives more practical guidance and easily accessible practices that you can use to raise your vibration than I’ve found anywhere else. At the heart of this book, it’s all about teaching you to accept the joy, love, peace, and happiness that you deserve. And personally, I can’t think of anything more beautiful.

    The Power of Now

    The Power of Now isn’t marketed as a manifestation book, but I’d argue that the concepts and ideas Eckhart Tolle presents in his acclaimed book are vital if you want to begin manifesting anything into your experience.

    While visualization of the future is a powerful tool in manifestation, there’s arguably nothing more powerful than the power you hold in this present moment. In each and every moment, we choose the energy we put out into the world, and by offering positive vibrations in this present moment, we attract more positive vibrations to come our way. But living in the present moment isn’t easy for most of us, which is why I love Eckhart Tolle’s book for manifestation. It takes you on a powerful journey of spiritual and personal growth and teaches you how to connect with yourself and live in this moment right now.

    You Can Heal Your Life

    As a positive affirmation devotee, I’m a big fan of Louise Hay, who is known for her powerful affirmations and her positive words. You Can Heal Your Life is all about helping you to discover and cultivate unconditional self-love and self-worth. It gently guides you to take accountability for your own life and understand that everything that you put out into the world is what you receive.

    I’ll admit, this can be either a positive thing or triggering for some depending on your willingness to take ownership of the events in your life. But if you’re willing to embrace ownership of your life’s story, you’ll see it as a beautiful opportunity to start creating the incredible life you’ve always desired.

    The Magic of Manifesting

    What I love most about The Magic of Manifesting is that it acts like a practical handbook that you can continually come back to as you walk forward in your journey of manifestation. Ryuu Shinohara’s book discusses both the scientific and spiritual basis of manifestation and gives you 15 practical techniques you can start using today to manifest your best life.

    There isn’t any fluff here; Shinohara’s book is full of powerful practices and accessible explanations and ideas that explain not only what to do, but why these techniques work. This book is for anyone who wants to learn more about manifestation while gaining some valuable practices you can start utilizing today.

    Becoming Supernatural

    Dr. Joe Dispenza’s Becoming Supernatural is a bit different than most of the other books on this list. It’s based in science and uses research in neuroscience, epigenetics, psychoneuroimmunology, neurocardiology, electromagnetism, and quantum physics to show the extraordinary potential of the human mind. This is a step-by-step guide that shows you how to create the extraordinary new life you’re capable of living.

    If you’ve ever listened to Dr. Joe speak, you know there’s always an excitement and buzz underlying his spoken words. That same buzz is present in his written words, too, and it’ll leave you both captivated and enthusiastic about discovering your own supernatural potential.

    Infinite Possibilities

    The underlying thesis in Infinite Possibilities is exactly what the title says: you are filled with infinite possibilities, and you have the power to create your own future and to live a life of extraordinary happiness. Mike Dooley says his mission in this book is to show you how powerful you are, how far you can reach, and how much you deserve, and I can personally attest that it won’t take long as you’re reading this book before you begin to believe that’s true.

    I love the way Dooley inspires and encourages, and I especially love his assertion that your dreams aren’t yours by accident; they’re what’s meant to be. Start believing you deserve it, and you can create anything you can dream of (and more).

    Dear Universe

    Sarah Prout’s Dear Universe: 200 Mini-Meditations for Instant Manifestation is packed with powerful practices and guidance that you can start incorporating into your life today. Prout pinpoints one of the biggest hurdles that stops us from manifesting our dreams – fear – and dedicates 100 mini-meditations to rising above fear so you can open yourself up and move closer towards your dreams. She dedicates the other 100 mini-meditations to embracing love so you can start feeling the positive emotions of your desired manifestation today.

    What I love about this book is that it acts like your own personal companion that supports you on your journey, no matter how you’re feeling. Each mini-meditation is dedicated to a specific emotion, such as anger or uncertainty. So if you’re feeling a certain emotion, you can flip to that page in the book and follow the guidance on the page.

    The Secret

    Finally, I feel like it’d be remiss of me to create a list of the best manifestation books without including The Secret. It certainly wasn’t the first manifestation book, but it was the one that got the world’s attention, for good reason. There’s something about the way Rhonda Byrne presents the information in this book that makes it feel like it’s the truth you’ve been waiting for your entire life. If you’re a beginning manifestor, I think this is the perfect gateway to learning more about the Law of Attraction and beginning to unlock your manifestation superpowers today. (This is the one that got me started, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since!)

    How To Cleanse Your Crystals

    When you first purchase a new crystal, it’s important to cleanse the crystal before you use it, even if you only intend to have it sit in one spot. Crystals hold energy inside them, and when you first receive them, it’s almost a sure thing that they’ll be holding some kind of energy within from past owners and experiences.

Even if you’ve cleansed a new crystal once, it will continue to receive and store energy with time. Eventually, if there’s too much energy stored inside it, it will no longer work effectively. Try to cleanse your crystals at least once a month using any of the methods below.

    Sage: Using a firesafe bowl or abalone shell to catch any burning embers and/or ash, light your sage and immerse the crystal in the smoke for 30 to 60 seconds. While you can do this anywhere, I prefer to do this either outside or near an open window. On top of safety reasons, it allows any past negative energy to rise and disappear into the air, ensuring it doesn’t remain in your sacred space. (You can also use Palo Santo in place of Sage if you prefer.)

    Water: If possible, try to use clean, natural water like a creek, river, or stream. Hold your stone beneath the surface and rinse it within the running water. If there’s no natural water nearby, it’s okay to use a faucet. Either way, just be sure to first do a quick Google search or consult a book on crystals to make sure water is safe for your stone. You don’t want to use this method for soft stones like Selenite.

    Use Selenite or Clear Quartz: Selenite and Clear Quartz are both beautiful crystals that typically have a whitish, clear surface. These crystals are unique in that they are able to cleanse and purify other crystals. Lay your crystal on a piece of Selenite or Clear Quartz for at least 24 hours. If you can’t place your crystal on top, you can also place them side-by-side with their edges touching.

    Nature: I like to compare crystals to people when it comes to holding energy. When we store old or negative energy within, one of the most powerful ways to balance our own energy is to spend time in nature. Crystals are the same. Lay your crystals out in nature and let them experience the healing presence of the earth for a day. You can place crystals on the soil, on a tree branch, on a potted plant, among the blades of grass, in your garden, or anywhere else outside where you feel a sense of peace and harmony.

    Sun: Many crystals love the bright energy and light of the sun. Just make sure first that this is safe for your stone. Some stones, like Amethyst, shouldn’t be placed directly in the sun for too long.

    Moon: You can place your crystals outside overnight anytime, but this is especially powerful during the Full Moon when the moonlight is brightest.

    How To Program Crystals & Gemstones

    Programming your crystals is the act of setting an intention so that you and your crystal are in alignment. When using crystals to help heal anxiety and restore balance within, your intention will likely have something to do with walking forward on your path with a sense of calm, alignment, harmony, and ease.

    Here are a few examples of intentions that you might set:

    • My energy is perfectly aligned and balanced. I feel calm, confident, and at ease.
    • I am protected from negative energy. All of the energy that flows within and around me supports my highest good and total well-being.
    • I cultivate power, courage, and strength within to confidently face all situations.

    Your intention might also be more specific if your anxiety arises during certain situations, such as at work or during social events.

    Programming your crystals comes after cleansing your crystals. When your crystal has been properly cleansed, find a quiet spot where you can be undisturbed for at least 10 to 15 minutes. If you have a sacred space or a meditation table, this is the perfect time to use this space. Feel free to light some candles or cleanse the space with sage before you begin.

    Hold your crystal within your hands and state your intention out loud. Lift your crystal to your mouth and gently breathe on it. As you breathe, internally state your intention. Ideally, you will be in a high-vibrational state while doing this. Repeat this for several minutes, or until you feel ready to move to the next step.

    You can lower your hands now if you wish, keeping your crystal within your palms. Close your eyes (if they aren’t already closed) and visualize your intention coming to life. Visualize the life you imagine for yourself with this intention coming true. See your highest, most authentic self living your most confident life – a life where anxiety doesn’t have a hold over you.

    And as you visualize, allow yourself to truly feel all of the positive emotions associated with your vision.

    Continue your visualization until you feel that the crystal has been programmed with your intention. (This feeling will be a deep inner knowing. It won’t be anything big or flashy. Think of it like a small, gentle nudge within.)

    How To Use Crystals & Stones For Anxiety

    Keep in Your Office/Workspace: Keep your gemstones visible in your office or workspace, or if you have a job that requires you to walk around, see if you can keep it in your pocket or somewhere accessible to you. Blue Lace Agate is the perfect crystal to keep with you while you work as it calms your mind, soothes your spirit, and helps you to maintain tranquility.

    Meditate with Crystals: Find a quiet, safe spot and hold your crystal(s) as you meditate. You can also place the stones over their corresponding energy center while laying down.     Wear Crystals as Jewelry: Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings are a beautiful way to keep your crystals with you at all times.     But the physical surface you choose is only half of what makes a meditation table such a profound tool for your spiritual growth.

    Equally as important are the objects you choose to set on and around the table. While these objects can vary in nature, ultimately, they should possess significant meaning to you.

    The overall space you create with your meditation table should serve and support your total well-being: mind, body, and spirit.

    This is a place that nourishes your soul, feeds your spirit, and helps you to connect with your highest, most authentic self.

    And most importantly, this is a safe place where you can come home to yourself.

    You might call your meditation table your altar, sacred space, shrine, or another term that feels right to you. And despite its name, you don’t have to solely use your meditation table for the practice of meditating.

    You might choose to sit at your meditation table in the morning to set daily intentions, pull affirmation cards, or write in your gratitude journal.

    Absolutely not. Your meditation table can be as big or as small as you choose. Remember, bigger doesn’t always mean better. If you have only a small corner to dedicate to your sacred space, that’s more than enough. Choose a meditation table that fits your needs; dimensions and aesthetics are completely up to you.

    What do I put on my meditation table?

    Choose items that resonate with you. This meditation table belongs solely to you, and all that matters is the feeling the items bring when you look at and/or touch them.

    You can put as much or as little on your table as you’d like; in fact, you don’t have to put anything on it at all if your soul desires a clean, empty space.

    The most important thing is to choose items that help you to connect with your inner self and that bring a sense of peace, calm, security, groundedness, love, and connection with yourself and the world around you.

    How do I set up my meditation table?

    Set up your table in a way that feels calming to you. If you like everything neat and organized, then you might set it up so it looks balanced and orderly. If you think a little messiness is kind of beautiful, then you might let your inner creative take the reins and place items wherever your heart wants them to go. You might also like to sit at your meditation table after work to release the day and invite a sense of calm and peace into your evening.

    To create your serene meditation table, you first want to start with the foundation on which you’ll be building upon: the table itself.

    You may already have a piece of furniture in your home that would work perfectly for this function. If you’re a DIYer, this is a great opportunity to get creative as you check out local yard sales and thrift stores for the inspiring piece that speaks to you. Sand, stain, paint, or leave it perfectly imperfect: whatever feels right to you. (You can use sage to cleanse the energy of the table if you’d like.)

    Why You Should Be Using Crystals

    You are already a powerful manifestor, whether or not you’re consciously aware of it.

    Throughout your life, you’ve been emitting energy out into the world that reflects your inner state.

    You might call this your energetic signature, and this can change from day to day – and even from moment to moment.

    When you feel peaceful and calm, you radiate an overall aura of deep serenity. This energy doesn’t just flow through you; it surrounds your entire being.

    If this is hard to imagine, think about the energy you feel when you’re around specific people. Do you love to be in the company of certain friends, family, or coworkers because of the positive energy you feel when you’re around them?

    And on the other side, are there certain people you avoid because they carry a constant energy of negativity?

    You, too, carry a specific energy signature throughout your day. Manifestation is the art of tuning your own energy to your desired state of being. When you emit an energy of deep inner peace from within, you invite more experiences of peace and serenity in your outside world.

    When you use crystals for manifestation, your chosen stones aren’t simply attracting love, financial abundance, health, and other desired outcomes to you; they’re helping you to cultivate a deep sense of self so that you discover that these things already exist within you.

    You are love. Love is your birthright. So is financial abundance, health, joy, creativity, passion, and all kinds of really good and wonderful things.

    Crystals help you to become the energy of what it is that you want to manifest.

    They restore harmony and balance within you and empower you to live as your highest and most authentic self.

    And when you become the energy you want to manifest, you attract more of this energy to you.

    Become unconditional love. Receive unconditional love.

    Become abundance. Receive abundance.

    By becoming, you’re opening yourself up to receiving.

    How to Cleanse Your Crystals

    Why do we cleanse crystals before using them? Imagine that you’re moving into a “new” old house. Even though the house is new to you, you know that the house has been lived in by several families before you. These families made their own memories in the house, and over the years, they’ve left behind bits and pieces of their energy inside that house.

    Just like you want to clear the energy of the past residents so you can start anew in this house, you want to clear any old energy and past intentions still being held in your crystals.

    Even if you’re the first person to ever own this crystal, it’s likely traveled a long way from its source to the seller to you. Because you don’t know what kind of energy is currently held in your new crystal(s), it’s a best practice to cleanse your crystals before using them.

    Methods to Cleanse Crystals:

    • Sage: Light your sage and immerse the crystal in the smoke for thirty to sixty seconds. Be sure to use a firesafe bowl or abalone shell to catch burning embers and ash. It’s best to do this outside or near an open window for two reasons: A) Safety and B) It allows any negative and old energies to rise in the air and disappear from your space.
    • Water: Rinse your stone under the running water of a creek or stream. If this isn’t possible, you can also use a faucet. Just make sure to do a little research first to make sure it’s safe for your stone. You don’t want to use this method for soft stones like Selenite.
    • Use Selenite or Clear Quartz: Both of these crystals have the ability to cleanse and purify other crystals. Lay your crystal on a piece of Selenite or Clear Quartz for at least twenty-four hours. If you can’t place your crystal on top, it also works to have them side-by-side as long as they’re touching.
    • Nature: When I need to reset and get realigned, I can always restore balance within when I immerse myself in nature. Crystals are the same. Place your crystals outside on the soil, on the branches of a tree, on a potted plant, or anywhere else outdoors where you feel a sense of peace and balance. If possible, try to keep your crystals outside for at least a full day, avoiding dew and prolonged exposure to sunlight.
    • Sun/Moon: Place your crystals outside in the sun or moon for ten to twelve hours (or overnight). This is especially powerful during the Full Moon when the moonlight is brightest. If you’re going to use this method, just make sure it’s safe for your stone. For certain stones, like Amethyst, you want to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.

    How to Program Crystals for Manifestation

    The number one most important thing to remember when it comes to programming your crystals for manifestation isn’t the method itself; it’s your intention. There are several ways to program your crystals, and none are inherently better than the others. What matters is your intention during the process.

    It helps to have a powerful sentence or phrase to use when you’re getting ready to program your crystals. For instance, if you want to manifest health, your sentence might be, “I am living my healthiest and most fit life in a body I truly love.” Or if you’re manifesting financial abundance, your intention might be, “I am a successful entrepreneur, and financial prosperity comes easily and effortlessly to me.

    The key is, before you sit down to program your crystals, make sure you really know what it is that you want to manifest.

    Methods to Program Crystals:

    • Visualize: Sit in a quiet, safe place where you won’t be interrupted. Hold your crystal(s) in your hands. In your mind, speak your intention. Then, visualize what this intention looks like. What does financial abundance look like to you? How do you envision romantic love? What do you see when you imagine yourself living your healthiest and most fit life? Sit in silence for a while and see your intentions manifesting in your mind, feeling the emotions of peace, freedom, joy, love, and/or any other positive emotions that arise when you visualize your dream.
    • Breathe into the crystal: Again, find a quiet and safe spot where you won’t be interrupted. Place your stone(s) in your hands and repeat your intention in your head. Bring your stone(s) up to your mouth and breathe into them, repeating your intention in your head. Continue to do this for five to ten minutes, or as long as it takes to feel like your gemstones are fully activated.

    How To Use Crystals To Manifest What You Want

    • Wear crystals as jewelry: Wearing your stones as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings allows you to easily keep your stone with you at all times. I love rings especially because you can look down at them anytime and be reminded of your limitless power. On top of that, wearing beautiful things helps you to feel good and sparks joy within. And this is not superficial or shallow. Lean into the belief that you are worthy and deserving of wearing beautiful things. If it supports the internal joy that you cultivate within, embrace it.
    • Keep crystals nearby throughout your day: But be intentional with placement. For instance, if you’re using gemstones to manifest financial abundance, place them in your workspace to promote the continual incoming paychecks and flow of money coming in. You can also place them in your wallet or purse to amplify the energy of abundance. Similarly, if you’re manifesting creativity, keep your gemstones in your office or studio where you do most of your creative endeavors.
    • Keep crystals in your pocket: If you don’t have jewelry with your chosen gemstone (or don’t want to wear jewelry), you can keep your crystals in your pocket so they’re still with you throughout the day.

    Crystals to Manifest Financial Abundance

    • Citrine: When it comes to manifesting financial abundance, citrine is an absolute powerhouse. Known as the “Merchant Stone” or “Success Stone,” citrine is associated with wealth, prosperity, and financial success. Additionally, citrine is associated with your solar plexus chakra, which is your energy center for confidence, empowerment, positivity, and high self-esteem.     Many people feel like their intuition doesn’t work or that they don’t have access to their deep inner knowing. But the truth is, everybody has access to their inner guidance system. But like a muscle, you have to work with it regularly in order to make it stronger.

    The most profound practices for tapping into your intuition are meditation and mindfulness. What blocks us from accessing our intuition more than anything else is being immersed in outer noise. When you’re constantly living externally, you have a hard time connecting to your heart’s wisdom.

    So to access your intuition, you have to step back from the noise. You have to get really quiet. You have to take full, deep breaths. And you have to be patient.

    When you’re strength training, you won’t see a profound difference in your muscle growth after only one workout. The same goes for your intuition. You have to keep coming back to silence, over and over again. You have to make space for your inner knowing to come forward, and you have to keep quieting your mind so your heart can speak.

    Meditation is a profound way to connect to your heart’s deepest dreams and desires. Not only can meditation help you to cultivate inner peace, tap into your intuition, and lean a little deeper into gratitude, but it can also be a powerful way to visualize and align with the thoughts, feelings, and images of having your desires in this present moment.

    And guided manifestation meditations are a powerful place to start.

    First, what exactly is a manifestation meditation?

    A manifestation meditation is a meditation specifically designed to help you align with the positive thoughts and emotions of your dreams and desires, lifting your vibrations so that you become a magnet for all of your deepest dreams.

    Guided meditations for manifesting can be an easy yet profound way to help you set intentions, cultivate gratitude, lift your vibration, and visualize the truest, most beautiful life you can imagine for yourself.

    And the best part? They don’t actually have to take very much time.

    As you’ll see, most of the guided meditations below are only about ten minutes long, yet they’re filled with tools to help you embody the vibration of already having your dreams and desires in this present moment.

    While you can do these meditations any time of the day, I especially love to listen to them in the morning shortly after I wake up. I’ve found that by starting my day with a meditation, I set a positive foundation for the day ahead.

    And when you specifically listen to a guided meditation for manifesting your desires in the morning, you can carry that positive energy from the meditation with you throughout the day.

    Below, I’ve linked to nine of my favorite guided manifestations for manifesting love, abundance, and more. You’ll notice that all of these meditations are available for free through Insight Timer. I have no affiliations with Insight Timer and don’t receive anything for these links.     What Are Your Chakras?

    Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disk.” A commonly accepted definition for the word chakra is a wheel of energy in your body

    You can also think of it like a vortex of energy within you. This vortex isn’t an actual physical thing, though. Rather, it’s energy that you experience through feelings, sensations, and your deep inner knowing.

    So what do these vortexes, or energy centers, do?

    Within you, you hold universal life force, or prana. Ideally, your life force is always flowing effortlessly through your body. You can think of it kind of like you have your own transportation infrastructure inside you. Your life force is the vehicle moving through you. This vehicle travels along roads called nadis. (You have thousands of these roads, or energy channels, inside of you.) And these nadis meet at intersections, which are your chakras.

    So ideally, everything in your infrastructure is working perfectly. Roads are open. Intersections are unblocked. Energy flows seamlessly.

    But just like an actual road or highway, everything doesn’t always work as perfectly as we’d like. Sometimes, intersections get blocked. Roads get backed up. Cars get stuck.

    This happens when your energy gets stuck somewhere inside you. For instance, let’s start with your root chakra, also known as your first chakra, located at the base of your spine.

    The root chakra is your body’s energy center for stability, safety, strength, security, groundedness, and inner peace. Your root chakra acts as your foundation. This is where you build your strength, power, and steadiness so that the flow of energy can easily move freely throughout your entire body.

    Now, let’s say your fundamental needs like food, shelter, warmth, and safety aren’t being met. Or maybe you feel financially insecure or uncertain about potential job layoffs. When these things happen, your energy gets stuck at this energy center, unable to move freely through this intersection.

    This results in energetic imbalances, which can manifest as feelings of insecurity, anxiety, depression, disconnection, fear, worry, and restlessness.

    Self-Care For The Chakras

    So why is self-care important for activating, opening, and healing your chakras?

    Each energy center is connected to specific emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual attributes. For instance, as we mentioned above, the root chakra is associated with security, stability, and strength. Your sacral chakra, which is your second chakra, is associated with creativity, passion, joy, and prosperity. (You have more than seven chakras, but we tend to focus on the seven below as being your seven “main” energy centers.)

    In order to ensure your energy is flowing freely within you, it’s important to regularly check in with yourself. Has your creativity been stifled lately? Have you been engaging in too much work and not enough play? Is your sense of security shaken? Do you feel like you can speak your authentic truth? Do you feel connected to yourself, others, and the universe as a whole?

    By connecting with yourself and pinpointing any potential blockages within, you can make space to spend a little extra time with this part of your inner being. Self-care is a profound way to do this.

    Below, you’ll find self-care practices for each of your body’s energy centers. I’ve also included the balanced and imbalanced attributes for each of your main chakras. If you meet the balanced attributes, your energy is likely in a good place. But if you meet more of the imbalanced attributes, you may want to spend some extra time engaging in self-care practices associated with that energy center.

    Root Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Muladhara (Mula: “root”; Adhara: “support” or “base”)
    • Location: Base of spine
    • Color: Red
    • Balanced Attributes: Secure, Grounded, Strong, Centered, Stable, Steady, Safe, Peaceful, Supported, All Basic Needs Are Met
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Insecure, Anxious, Depressed, Scattered, Disconnected, Restless, Fearful, Cynical, Neglected, Worried
    • Fundamental Need: Survival
    Connect to the Earth

    The root chakra is associated with the earth, and one of the most powerful self-care activities you can perform is to immerse yourself in nature and let your bare feet touch the ground. You might also find a quiet spot to sit outside where you can journal, meditate, or just simply be. If you’re a gardener, you might choose to go outside and work in your garden, allowing your bare hands to dig into the earth. Nature is one of the greatest healers in the universe. When you take the time to connect with the earth, you connect with your roots, your foundation, and the truest, most authentic you.

    Focus on Your Basic Needs

    When we think of self-care, we often think of pampering activities such as spa days and pedicures. But self-care is intrinsically something more. Whenever you brush your teeth, take a shower, or schedule a medical appointment, you’re practicing self-care. And taking care of your basic needs is the foundation of self-care. These needs include food, water, warmth, rest, security, and safety. Have you been getting enough calories? Have you gotten enough sleep? Write a list of all the things that you need in order to meet your basic, foundational needs, and regularly make sure you’re meeting your needs.

    Other Practices
    • Meditate
    • Repeat root chakra affirmations
    • Practice breathing exercises, such as alternate nostril breathing
    • Express gratitude for everything in your life that contributes to an open root chakra, such as your home, blankets, food, access to clean water, and the locks on your door.
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, Tree Pose, Lunge Pose, Warrior II

    Sacral Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Svadhishthana (Sva = “self”; shthana = “place”)
    • Location: Lower abdomen (below your navel)
    • Color: Orange
    • Balanced Attributes: Creative, Joyful, Playful, Prosperous, Stable, Sexual, Sensual, Passionate, Open, Energetic, Honest, Forgiving
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Lack of Creativity, Unstable, Insecure, Anxious, Scattered, Lazy, Fearful, Disconnected, Depressed, Unmotivated, Negative, Lack of Sensuality
    • Fundamental Need: Emotional flow, desire, sexuality
    Get Creative

    How often do you make space in your life for creativity that has absolutely no end goal? It’s not meant to be productive. It’s not meant to be good. And it’s definitely not meant to be perfect. It’s just pure, unrestricted, joyful creativity. Embracing your creative flow is one of the most beneficial practices you can do when working with your sacral chakra. Do something you feel good about that isn’t related to your job and that you don’t feel the need to be perfect when doing. Let it be both messy and beautiful.

    Spend Time In Water

    The sacral chakra’s associated element is water, and there are several powerful ways you can use water to connect with this energy center. My personal favorite practice is to take a luxurious bubble bath. When your sacral chakra is open and balanced, you have a positive relationship with your body and embrace your own divine sensuality. A warm bubble bath is the perfect way to honor your body. Of course, you can also find water all over nature, which is one of our greatest teachers and healers. Oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams all offer opportunities to connect with your sacral chakra. If you’re not too keen on getting in the water, that’s okay! Even sitting near the water while meditating, journaling, or simply sitting in silence can offer meaningful healing.

    Other Practices
    • Dance
    • Smile and genuinely compliment yourself every time you look in the mirror
    • Meditate
    • Repeat sacral chakra affirmations
    • Write a letter to your inner child encouraging yourself to play and use your divine imagination.
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Pigeon, Butterfly, Frog, Cobra, Goddess Squat

    Solar Plexus Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Manipura (“City of Jewels”; sometimes translated as “Lustrous Gem”)
    • Location: A couple inches above the navel/Below the chest
    • Color: Yellow
    • Balanced Attributes: Confident, Positive, Joyful, Empowered, Driven, Motivated, Collaborative, High Self-Esteem
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Lack of Confidence, Negative, Fearful, Low Energy, Indifferent, Unmotivated, Competitive, Low Self-Esteem
    • Fundamental Need: Self-worth
    Fire and Sun

    The solar plexus chakra’s element is fire, so this is the perfect time to have a (safe) bonfire with friends or enjoy some family time by the fireplace. You could also combine some time by the fire with other self-care practices, like meditating. If it’s summer and you’re not keen on starting the fireplace, another powerful practice to balance your solar plexus is to go for a walk or have a picnic in the sun. 

    Write A Self-Love List

    Write out a list of positive qualities you love about yourself, and describe why you love each of those things. For instance, “I love my smile because it lights up a room. When I smile, I notice that other people smile, too.” Focus on both your internal and external qualities. There’s no room for negativity here. Compliment yourself. Focus on the positive. Remember that you are worthy and deserving of unconditional joy and love.

    Other Practices
    • Meditate
    • Repeat solar plexus affirmations
    • Practice color therapy by immersing yourself in all things yellow. Eat yellow foods such as bananas, pineapple, yellow peppers, and squash. Light yellow, lemon-scented candles. Wear yellow. Paint with the color yellow. Color therapy is helpful for working with any of your chakras, but I especially love it for working with the solar plexus chakra because yellow is such a bright, happy color.
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Warrior I, Full Boat Pose, Bow Pose, Reverse Triangle Pose, Warrior III, Plank

    Heart Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Anahata (“Unstruck”)
    • Location: Heart/Center of chest
    • Color: Green
    • Balanced Attributes: Loving, Loveable, Peaceful, Compassionate, Empathetic, Trustful, Open-Hearted, Serene, Understanding, Kind
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Unloved, Unlovable, Lonely, Depressed, Indifferent, Judgmental, Distrustful, Self-Isolates, Spiteful, Selfish
    • Fundamental Need: Love
    Walk in Nature

    The color of the heart chakra is green, and its element is air. Combine these attributes by taking a long, cleansing walk in nature, breathing in the fresh air. If you live near a forest or a beautiful, green meadow, this is ideal, but just taking a walk and getting some fresh air can do wonders for healing your heart chakra. You might also go to the beach on a breezy day and let the cool wind dance across your skin.

    “What Feels Like Love To Me?”

    If you’re feeling disconnected from yourself, ask yourself, “What feels like love to me?” This can vary depending on the day. For instance, sometimes love feels like eating your grandma’s homemade chocolate chips cookies, while other days, love feels like a big salad filled to the brim with fresh veggies. Sometimes, love feels going on a hike, and other times, love feels like staying in and cozying up on the couch with a good book. Ask yourself what feels like love to you and let your heart guide you to the answer.

    Other Practices
    • Meditate
    • Repeat heart chakra affirmations
    • Drive with the windows down and let the air blow against your skin
    • Practice any form of self-care that feels especially loving and nurturing to you
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Camel Pose, Wheel Pose, Handstand, Fish Pose, Extended Puppy Pose, Bridge Pose, Cow Face Pose

    Throat Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Vishuddha (“Especially pure” or “Purest”)
    • Location: Throat/Center of Neck
    • Color: Light Blue
    • Balanced Attributes: Communicative, Calm, Honest, Peaceful, Decisive, Expressive, Patient, Authentic, Centered, Good Listener
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Excessively Shy, Withdrawn, Dishonest, Loud, Indecisive, Inexpressive, Impatient, Disingenous, Moody, Insincere
    • Fundamental Need: Expression
    Find A Big, Open Space Outdoors

    Yep, nature again. If it’s a nice day, find a quiet spot outside where you have plenty of space. Lay on the ground and watch the sky. You could also meditate outside, sketch the scenery, or write a letter. If you hear any nature sounds, like birds chirping or a babbling creek, allow yourself to close your eyes and just listen. (Listening is as important for your throat chakra as speaking.)

    Write a Letter

    Write an open letter to somebody in your life: a current or past partner, friend, relative, boss, coworker, or even an acquaintance. What have you always wanted to say to this person but never found the courage or the right words? Write your truth in this letter. Allow yourself to release any negative emotions that your body may have been carrying from holding in your truth. (You don’t have to actually send this letter. Simply writing the words may be enough to release this stagnant energy.)

    Other Practices
    • Meditate
    • Repeat throat chakra affirmations
    • Sing
    • Schedule a date with your best friend and practice speaking your authentic truth while being an active, engaged listener
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Cobra Pose, Fish Pose, Camel Pose, Bridge Pose, Rabbit Pose, Shoulder Stand, Seated Fold

    Third Eye Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Ajna (“Beyond wisdom.” Can also be translated as “Perceive” or “Command.”)
    • Location: Center of Forehead/Between Eyebrows
    • Color: Indigo (Also associated with purple.)
    • Balanced Attributes: Intuitive, Imaginative, Insightful, Perceptive, Open-Minded, Sense of Clarity, Mentally Strong, Trusting
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Lack of Intuition, Confused, Unimaginative, Fearful, Unable to Focus, Close-Minded, Scattered, Distrusting
    • Fundamental Need: Insight and intuition
    Immerse Yourself in Light

    The third eye chakra’s element is light, so embrace opportunities to sit or walk in the sunshine. If you have a sun room or any open rooms with big windows in your home, take advantage of this space by sitting in silence, reading, or doing some crossword puzzles/logic games. You might also try sitting or meditating under the moonlight if it’s especially bright out.

    Tap Into Your Intuition

    Your intuition is that deep inner knowing that whispers inside of you. We all have one, but like a muscle, it becomes stronger when we actively work with it. The first step to working with your intuition is to quiet your mind and simply listen. You can’t hear what that inner voice is trying to tell you if you’re constantly immersed in noise. The quickest and most profound way to start connecting with your intuition is to let silence be a normal part of your life.     • Do some logic puzzles and games that actively engage your mind
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Downward Facing Dog, Child’s Pose, Extended Puppy Pose, Seated Forward Bend, Head to Knee Pose, Pyramid Pose

    Crown Chakra Self-Care

    • Sanskrit Name: Sahasrara (“Thousand-petaled”)
    • Location: Top of Head
    • Color: Violet (White is often associated with this chakra as well.)
    • Balanced Attributes: Spiritual, Enlightened, Trusting, Peaceful, Creative, Focused, Blissful, Present, Connected to Higher Power
    • Imbalanced Attributes: Cynical, Close-Minded, Lack of Faith, Frustrated with Life, Forgetful, Unfocused, Lonely, Scattered, Disconnected
    • Fundamental Need: Connection to the divine
    Communicate with the Universe

    You can call this prayer or simply speaking to the Universe. If you’re feeling low, heavy, or detached, find a safe spot where you feel comfortable being vulnerable. Then, speak. Surrender your heaviness. Let it out. If it’s more comfortable for you to write your thoughts and feelings, write it in a letter. Then, allow whatever comes forth to be, exactly as it is. Trust that the Universe is supporting you in every way possible.

    Detox/Fast

    Your physical body needs food for nourishment, but your spiritual self doesn’t really need food in the same way. Unlike your other energy centers, which have associated foods that allow for healing, the crown chakra is best healed by detoxing or fasting.* This helps you to clear your mind while flushing out toxins that may be harming your body. When detoxing, focus on fresh fruits, veggies, and lots of water.

    *If you choose to detox or fast, just make sure you’re following the proper guidance of a medical professional.

    Other Practices
    • Meditate
    • Repeat crown chakra affirmations
    • Go inward. Try to find an open field or special spot that gives you lots of space to think, turn inward, and simply be. If you feel safe and comfortable enough to meditate outdoors, this would be the perfect time to meditate. If the weather allows, journaling outdoors is also another powerful practice for healing.
    • Practice yoga. Include the following poses (asanas): Lotus Pose, Corpse Pose, Tree Pose, Headstand, Fish Pose, Standing Prayer Backbend
